Product Description

Meet Ellie. She's been married to Jack for seven years, has two occasionally-adorable-but-mostly-demanding children and is about to open a café with her friend, Tilda. But Jack is a soap actor whose long-running character has been killed off, leaving him hanging around the house and getting under the feet of Petra, an au pair too glamorous for her own good - even if she is a dab hand with glitter and glue. Meanwhile Ellie's excitement about the café is making her marriage seem dreary in comparison and when the gorgeous Mark moves in next door (with a wife in tow, admittedly) she asks herself when she and Jack went past their sell-by-date. How can she put the sizzle back into her love life without breaking the rules? And is there really something better out there - or is she just scratching a classic seven year itch?

Although I say holiday read, I read this at home in bed, 18 weeks pregnant and I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me feel quite uncomfortable at how easy it would be to stray when one is locked into the mundanity of every day life. I found myself willing the protagonist to run off into the sunset with her neighbour/lover whilst at the same time silently screaming at her to get a life and get over it.

Fantastic read - every mummy should read it - it will touch a nerve in all of us!

The Seven Year Itch 1 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
A delightful, well-written romp that is impossible to put down (read: perfect for the holidays.) Kate Morris manages to capture it all - children, demanding husband, irresistible neighbour. Her gift is putting an original and witty slant on everything. Taking the ending into account, I cannot wait for the sequel.

I must declare an interest, as I read a chapter or two before it was published and made one recommendation which was taken up. Having said that, I was amazed by the whole book, didn't see it coming at all - from startling opening sentence to the twist in the tale. Tightly plotted, located believably in one woman's life - tracking her mistakes of thought and action with forensic precision. I found myself screaming silently, 'Don't do it!!!' as if I were at a pantomime. Uncomfortably right about the twisted guilt and unhappiness we feel about trying to do something for ourselves, which takes us away from our children. Excellent about what getting older does to a pretty woman's thought processes. Good on husbandly laziness in the light of children's demands. Clever about the distortion and crazy logic that love and lust produce in us. The children are beautifully characterised as the complex small humans that they really are - not the usual cute cyphers. Best scene for me was Ellie, the protagonist, trying to talk in whispers to a potential lover in her car, with 3-year-old Maud strapped in the back, straining at her harness and demanding:'Who is that daddy?'
