4.0 out of 5 stars Think you've got contemporary life figured? 7 July 2005
Format:Audio CD
Unbelievably, The Servant have cruised beneath the radar of true commercial success for some time. But if you listen to this rather dark, and sometimes even gothic album, you can't help but think that's how they'd like it. The band seem to be gaining a degree of renewed popularity after an instrumental version of their song 'Cells' was used on the trailer of ultra-cool film noir 'Sin City'. Strangely, neither the lyrics or the tune were ever introduced to the finished film; which is a shame as both the movie and the song seem to try and capture the monotony and corruption of modern urban decadence.

The album's tone resonates a similar futility to claustrophobic city romance as older electro-pop band 'Pulp'. 'Body', 'Orchestra' and 'Cells' are the most prominent tracks on the LP. They present the contemporary apathetic attitude to existence and to love with raw emotion. Visceral vocals, melodic harmonies and hard electronic beats meld together forming a crescendo of what can only be described as the painfully accurate sound of a tortured soul expressing all. My only qualm is that this album does focus mainly on the negative. But if you feel that you've fallen victim to the harsh realities of the modern world, swamped by vast buildings and meaningless encounters, then give this album a go. You'll feel right at home with these guys. They've been feeling the same way for some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly satisfying 31 Dec 2004
Format:Audio CD
Having seen the band in Montreux in 2002, it took a while to track down their first two mini-albums. Once they arrived, the musicality and originality kept them on my player for a long time, and they still get regular outings for a spin. When I saw the new CD, it was a no-brainer impulse buy, and I was rewarded by even moreof what I liked about the earlier stuff. Maybe a little less 'edgy', but still plenty of spark, drive, melody and power. If these are things you look for in your favourites, buy this and you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where American Rock Went Wrong 15 Jun 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album is a perfect example of why music from across the seas isn't making it stateside: it's too good. This band will bring some memories of Radiohead, but for the most part, they have a solid, stripped-down sound that has mastered the solid fundamentals of Rock.

I'd recomend this album to anyone who like solid rock with a strong melody. For people who know the bands Muse and Stereophonics, this would be a great album to keep alongside it. For those of you who are stateside, like me, (and this means you probably HAVEN'T heard of the bands I just named) I'd recomend this if you liked Radiohead. Actually, I recomend it across the board, but I'm trying to give a sense of the type of rock it's gonna be when you get it.
