Book Description

May 2012 Kane Chronicles (Book 3)

The Kane Chronicles: The Serpent's Shadow is the final thrilling instalment in award-winning author and Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan's Kane Chronicles trilogy. Is their inherited magic enough to battle against the most powerful mythical forces that Egypt's gods have to throw at them?

CARTER AND SADIE KANE, descendants of the magical House of Life, are in pretty big trouble.

Despite their bravest efforts, Apophis, the giant snake of Chaos, is still threatening to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Now the Kanes must do something no magician has ever managed - defeat Apophis himself. No pressure there then.

Battling against the forces of Chaos, their only hope is an ancient spell - but the magic has been lost for a millennia. Will they find the serpent's shadow, or will they be led to their deaths in the depths of the Underworld?

5.0 out of 5 stars Bulls with Freaking Laser Beams! 17 July 2012

The Kanes are back with this continuation of the Kane Chronicles in a spinning world of madness versus order (Chaos versus Ma-at). As their wild Egyptian magical adventures continue, Sadie and Carter find themselves in more and more precarious and strange situations. Their pursuit to defeat Apophis, the giant snake of Chaos, and stop him from swallowing the sun, takes them on treacherous adventures to find an ancient spell... from Brooklyn House to the Underworld to the Land of Demons and the Sea of Chaos.

Although this book is supposed to be a transcript, I find it hard to imagine Sadie or Carter describing things as they do in the book, so I suppose it is a mixture of transcript and regular writing. However I got over this pretty early on, as it doesn't really matter or affect the story when it comes down to it! Also I really enjoy that we see the story alternately from Sadie and Carter's perspectives. This adds a bit more variety to the book (not that it needs it!).

I have always loved Rick Riordan's characters and this is no exception - the book is bursting with them and they often have wonderful quirky, unusual personalities as well as looks! For example, Bloodstained Blade - demon captain of the Egyptian Queen with a blood-covered double-sided axe for a head, Bes - the crazy hairy dwarf God who always wears Speedos and yells `BOO!' a lot, and Setne - a dangerously sneaky ghost with a nasty streak and as fondness for dressing like the `Ancient Egyptian Mafia'.

Of course, Sadie and Carter are superb characters - I especially love Sadie's rebellious streak - and even though there was the occasional American word that I don't think Sadie would say being English, it was not enough to put me off at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funny! 9 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
Ok, so being an original fan of the Percy Jackson books, it took me a while to warm to the Kane chronicles, but by the end of the first book I loved Sadie and Carter and I love them even more now.

These books aren't just adventurous and a hugely entertaining lesson on Egyptian mythology but they are also laugh out loud funny.

The relationship between Carter and Sadie continues to go from strength to strength and as for Carter's relationship with Zia and Sadie's with Walt and Anubis...well I'm not saying a word. Lets just say it isn't all fun and games.

The bad guys are just as evil as in the last book though it quickly becomes clear that there is no black and white with regards to some of choices made and with whom the Kane's have to place there trust. With all the original evil doers and now with a bunch of new ones, the Kanes find themselves sorely tested.

However you read into this book and whatever you take away from it. If you've read the others in the series, if you love butt-kicking action, laugh out loud humour and dash of romance then this is a book not to be missed!

This by far the best book in the series. It has drama, action, adventure and best of all chaos! Just like the other books it follows the life of Sadie and Carter Kane and how they teach and learn mysterys magic to other young magicans. I would reccomend this series to ayone, I adored i'm sure you will to.

I just do not know where to start...so I'll go with pure, raging writer's envy! I, plus six assorted godchildren (who will butt in with their opinions in a minute, when I've got the boring grown-up raving-about-this out of the way) were left close to speechless by this third Kane instalment. It just kicked straight in with Riordan's trademark dead-pan-humour-scare-you-silly cocktail, and then it just flew. It's an extraordinary gift - ask any writer - to balance turbo-boosted action, compassion for the innocent and the hurt, with laugh-till-you-need-the-Heimlich dialogue and daftness. Millions try to write like this, but it takes someone really at the top of the game to make it look easy. You just keep on reading, knowing you're going to be swept along, breathless, and you'll never be tripped up by a dud scene. When I say this is 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' level wonderful, that's my highest praise. Buffy really is a work of genius. This book is an out-and-out joy.

And that's exactly what you feel, reading it - almost laughing at how instantly hooked in you are. Kane 3 is the-best-way-ever-to-spend-your-time fun and excitement, right to the last word.

But that's not what lifts this to Joss Whedon's Olympian heights. What makes all Riordan's books instant classics is heart. Huge, good-humoured understanding - and gentle teasing - of just how teens tick, and all they really care about most. I've had my godchildren on the phone practically yelling at me to get a move on and finish the books, so they can rave on about them for hours. Carter and Sadie - they've grown into exactly who they were meant to be, how we wanted them to be. They are one of the best realised siblings in YA/children's literature.

Bought as part of my grandson's 9th birthday present. He has all of the Rick Riordan books, some in book form and some on his kindle. When we left him he had his nose buried in it and was oblivious to real time and space as he was so engrossed.

4.0 out of 5 stars The serpents shadow
Flowing plot, yet confusing at points. Recommend reading the previous books first. All in all, however, a fantastic conclusion to the Kane trilogy.
