Product Description

Since the day he was dropped off at a Federation camp by parents who used him to gain political favor, cybernetic killing machine Soldier Fourteen existed only to carry out his orders. But when commanded to kill a baby girl, he defies his commander and deserts the Federation, seeking a place in the universe for himself and the defenseless innocent he's promised to protect.

Connell harvests the sea to feed his colony on a new, undeveloped world with no reason to attract Federation attention. When an armored figure appears on the beach, holding an infant, Connell fears the worst, but he may have found the best.

This story was written as a part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" event.

More About the Author

Somewhat of a nomad, Eden Winters has visited seven countries so far. Her earliest memories include making up stories for the family's pets, and through her academic years, she wrote many short stories and poems. Dreams of writing professionally were realized, only not as planned, with a good dozen years spent as a technical writer.

She began reading GLBT fiction as a way to better understand the issues faced by a dear friend and fell in love with the M/M romance genre. During a discussion of a favorite book, a fellow aficionado said, "We could do this, you know." Eden wrote her first novel shortly thereafter and never looked back.

Currently, Eden calls the southern US home, and many of her stories take place in the rural South. She lives alone, having successfully raised two children, and divides her time between a day job, friends, writing, trying different varieties of vegetarian cuisine, and outdoor adventures such as hiking and camping. Her musical tastes run from Ambient to Zydeco, and she's a firm believer that life is better with pets. She also loves cruising down the road on the back of a Harley Davidson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value 8 Feb 2014

I can't believe I paid 77p for this book. Unusual story about a man who is part machine and a soldier who can't kill a baby he finds. He heads off with her and finds a small village and a man who is of course the second character in the book. Great read and with an unusual but happy ending - don't let the unusual comment put you off - it is well worth your time. Another good one from Eden winters - bargain!

This is a tale unlike any that I've encountered before. It's a love story, but also one of simple decency that can exist in people/beings. There was much, much love in this tale. A logic-defying unconditional love of a human-cyborg hybrid for an innocent baby, love for the hybrid's partner - a love that continues beyond death, in a rather bizarre but very workable and loving way. Love for a child who you've raised from birth to death, acceptance of that love and eventual loss, with the legacy of that love being seen in the children and grandchildren to come...

It's strangely perhaps one of the more emotional MM reads that I've come across, despite one of the leads being a hybrid, who was altered to have his humanity forced out of him, to become nothing but a killing machine...humanity prevailed against the odds.

It's a 5* Keeper of a tale, one that I'd have been happy to pay for, had it not been currently free.

It's sad but heart warming, it's has a bit of sci-fi in it but it's more about the love story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute story 21 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The beginning put me off a bit--when they are killing all the people to claim the planet, and Fourteen's sudden change in behaviour...but fast forward to him landing at the new location and meeting Connell and I liked it.

It might have been Fourteen's learning to speak out loud after all the conversation being done mentally or his protectiveness of the baby, but he really grew on me.

I thought the relationship between him and Connell was really cute, especially the:
"Why do they do that with their lips?"
You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there.

However I'm not sure if I liked the end with the aging of the characters, especially with how short it is. I know it had to end somehow but I wasn't a fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too short to enjoy. 20 Mar 2014

I usually avoid stories under 100 pages but the blurb and reviews really grabbed me. I started reading expecting to be disappointed, and finished being glad to be proven wrong. There was so much story packed into so few words that it just felt like more. At the same time I really wish there was more, but only because I want to spend more time enjoying the read. Fantastic read which I heartily recommend. Please be aware that this is M/M based romance which is unfortunately an issue for some as a minority of reviews have shown.

When I started to read this book I thought I had made a mistake with it as it seemed that I was reading a sci- fi book but I persevered and was glad I did. This is an unusual book but well worth the read and if you are into sci-fi then you will ahve adouble treat. Buy it and enjoy it.

I bought this book for free and just fell in love with the characters. There was development and love and a twist at the end that just added so much.

This was not what I was expecting. Although I enjoyed the emotional interaction between Connell and Stone (Fourteen) I did not really enjoy the sexual relationship between them. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
A good thought provoking story. I enjoyed this greatly. Had me in tears at the end. But it was still a HEA ending even if it was a very unusual ending. Definitely worth a read.
