This is a great book, but its probably not for everyone.

I bought this book in Sept 2010 for my then ten week old son and have just come here to find the name for my sister in law who is struggling a little with her first newborn. Seeing the negative reviews i felt i had to say something. This book worked for me on day ten of implementing the plan and he has never looked back sleep wise, since. He'll be 3yo in June '13.

Yes the book does across a bit pro formula, but there is a whole section on breast feeding aswell. I think people are just a little bit shocked when the see a well written document
which says it's OK to formula feed. This was great for me as my milk didn't come in at all, we tried everything ( I mean it, you name it!) but it just didn't happen for me with my son. Alison makes you realize that this is OK. Her key philosophy is 'Happy Mum, Happy Baby.'

And thats how she also approaches sleeping, she gives you techniques to try if technique A doesn't work, she does offer alternatives.

It isn't strict routine based like some other books on the market. I know parents who swear by these books, but they are also the ones whos kids will only sleep at a certain time of day, in a certain environment and you never see them past 6.30pm in case it upsets the little ones routine.

The sensational baby sleep plan is a guide; we're all individuals and therefore will all parent differently. It's up to you how you wish to use this guide to aid a restful sleeping pattern for both of you as parents and your baby.

Buy this book! Thoroughly recommend you read before baby arrives as preps you (as much as is possible) for getting into a routine from the get go. Sleeping baby from 6weeks was the result (and 11 months later, he's still a brilliant sleeper)

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all expectant parents 30 July 2014
I bought this book when I was expecting my first child after seeing Alison on a TV show demonstrating her methods. Having read the book before my baby was born, I instantly felt that the methods described in the book would work. Within a couple of days after my daughter was born, we started to adopt a routine and around 6-7 weeks she started to sleep through the night. My daughter was breast and bottle fed. My daughter is approaching her 2nd birthday and we have always promoted a positive and calming approach to her sleep. She is a happy and contended child and I am a firm believer in ensuring babies and toddlers have sufficient sleep for their age. The reason I have chosen to write this review now is because I have just started reading Gina Ford's contended baby and toddler as I am expecting our 2nd baby in September. I have in truth had to skip through a lot of the guidance regarding advice on sleep and feeding for the baby as I cannot advocate nor follow advice to wake a sleeping baby. Having seen the positive effects on my daughter by allowing and ensuring she has sufficient sleep I am pro Alison's method. Wish she did a combined baby with toddler book!

As well as re-iterating most of the comments that other 5 star raters have given, I want to use this review to try and rebuff some of the claims made by the 1 star raters on this page who say the methods put forward in the book are evil or in some way cruel; but before that, here is a succint list of the key things my wife and I gained from using this book AS A GUIDE (yes a guide - it is not meant to be a prescriptive, regimented itinary such as Gina Ford's methods):
- it taught us how critically important it is to a baby's development that they're allowed to get good quantity and quality of sleep. It is all too easy as a new partent to put feeding, nappy changing, interaction and cuddles, and even our own selfish desire for contact with new babies before a baby's real and very important need to sleep
- that when a baby cries in the night, it is not always because they are hungry and must be fed, and it helped us to learn more quickly what our daughter actually needed and what different cries actually meant;
- within 9 weeks our baby daughter was sleeping through the night (yes THROUGH the night - 7pm to 7am) and 4 months on she hasn't once cried early in the night for food. In fact, by following Alison's guide, Anna (our daughter) never cries in the day because she is hungry as we know instinctively when she needs food and is showing signs of being hungry;
- our daughter is just a happy smiley little wonder, and I am convinced it is because Alison's guide has given us the confidence to let our baby get the sleep she needs, and not to rush and pick her up every time she meeps.

Now, onto the rebuffing...

In no way does Alison ever suggest that you ignore your baby's need to feed in the night in order to get it to sleep.

I only read a small amount but implemented the 7, 10, 1, 4, 7 feeding schedule instead of feeding on demand. The first day my 8 week old slept through the night. Ahhhh sleep... :-)
