Book Description

18 April 2013 Seal Island Trilogy
American doctor Tara Moore wants to disappear. On the run from an abusive husband, she seeks shelter on a windswept Irish island and dismisses the villagers' speculation that she is descended from a selkie-a magical creature who is bewitching the island. But when a ghostly woman appears to her with a warning, Tara realizes it was more than chance that brought her to this island. Desperate to escape a dark and dangerous past, she struggles against a passionate attraction to handsome islander, Dominic O'Sullivan. But the enchantment of the island soon overpowers her and she falls helpless under its spell. Caught between magic and reality, Tara must find a way to wield both when a dangerous stranger from her past arrives, threatening to destroy the lives of everyone on the island.

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating read 4 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Selkie Spell is one of those rare books that manages to be so many things; it's charming and thrilling with so many elements thrown together in such a way as to make perfection. The book is perfectly tensioned right the way through and there was never a moment where it felt right to put it down so I stayed up till midnight reading so I could hear the end. The characters created are bright and vibrant, seeming to jump off the page and the relationships are believable and accurate. There is so much more I'd like to put here but I don't want to litter my review with spoilers for those who haven't read the book yet. Suffice to say that it is well worth the money and you will not be disappointed, a wonderful tale that will leave you desperate for more from this up and coming writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read!! 30 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Selkie Spell by Sophie Moss is a story that won't disappoint! I absolutely loved this book. I knew I wanted to read it as soon as I saw it had to do with Ireland as I love Ireland. The plot is amazing as are the characters. I really can't give enough praise to this book. Sophie Moss writes brilliantly, and I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy about Caitlan & Liam =) Plus, I want to find out more about my favourite characters Tara, Dominic, and little Kelsey =)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Five Star Read! 9 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well wow! What an AMAZING book! Why did I wait so long to read this?

I absolutely adored Sophie Moss' fluid and stunning writing style with beautifully detailed prose that linked the story together. It gave an incredible sence of place, and just her wonderful descriptions had me feeling wet sand beneath my feet and the cold foamy ocean lapping over my chilled toes. Stunning, just stunning!

The storyline was so cleverly put together with their being a perfect balance between the fantasy elements and the contemporary romance and suspense that formed the story. The care and delicacy with which Sophie Moss wrote of Tara's marital abuse whilst also painting a harsh, terrifying and realistic view of this issue was done without fault, and perfectly balanced with the strength that Tara had to find within herself and the connection her story had with that of the Island's Selkie.

Her relationship with Dominick was paced perfectly, and I loved the turbulent start they had when he was distrustful of her and protective of further harm to his family and friends. His continued scepticism of her intentions was great fun to read, as I loved witnessing his harsh mask occasionally falling away as he noticed her vulnerability, and he felt himself fighting between his head and heart.

I loved the balance of the story, with lots of gorgeous descriptions of the Island, the people that Tara slowly begins to trust and befriend, and the everyday life on the small Island, as well as the development of the intriguing Selkie storyline and how Tara fits into the legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling read 1 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Selkie Spell is a compelling read offering so much - romance, suspense, fantasy, and thriller. With elements of fear and intrigue cleverly intertwined, it is a love story, set against ideas of Irish mythology, which have been elaborated on to provide a tale that draws you in and holds you until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unwanted entanglement 30 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Tara is running from a disastrous marriage and reaches journey's end on a remote Scottish island. Dominic is determined never again to let any outsider into his - or his daughter's - life. However, the ease with which Tara slips into the life of the island and the strange happenings after her arrival make it seem as if the legend of the selkie might not be just a story for children and tourists after all.

The development of a relationship that starts with open hostility is beautifully written and, although the ending is inevitable, there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. An excellent read and I look forward to the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I cheered, I cried, I was beguiled 31 July 2013
By Wombat
Format:Kindle Edition
Sophie Moss is a writer you can trust. You can trust her storytelling, her characters, her pacing. Most of all you can trust her to entertain you without once resorting to either cliché or stereotype. Let her take you by the hand and lead you into her world, a place that is real and yet unreal, idyllic yet awry. Admire the beauty laid out before you, and try to ignore that dark flicker in the corner of your eye. Wrap yourself in the atmosphere of Seal Island, and shiver deliciously when Ms. Moss catches you off guard with things that should not happen, yet do. Things that somehow do not seem out of place in this magical landscape.
Believable three-dimensional characters populate Ms. Moss's Ireland. The protagonist is flawed yet lovable, the bad guy's actions completely understandable within his own context. How refreshing to meet people who do not simply perform to a genre-dictated script. On top of this, the touches of myth and magic are the perfect garnish for this feast for the imagination.
One reviewer has pointed out errors in the Irish way of speaking. Yes, this does happen in a few places, at least until a new edition addresses them, but such are very rare and in no way detract from the tale or pull you out of the story. I only noticed a few on my second read through.
Ms. Moss has a deft hand with language; I can honestly say that I have highlighted more enchanting passages in her work than any other writer on my Kindle, saving perhaps my beloved Pepys. I cheered, I cried, I was beguiled throughout. Do yourself a favour: take Sophie's hand and enter her enthralling world.
