4.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly remeniscent of the Torughton era! 17 April 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great addition to the Companion Chronicles range by Big Finish!

Starring Frazer Hines and Anneke Wills, both actors give extremely credible performances of not only their own characters but also of Ben and the Doctor. Hines' portrayal of the Doctor is nothing short of magnificent, he really does capture the mannerisms and the characterisation of Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, and it makes not only this story but every companion chronicle he does even more engrossing!

The story/plot isn't exactly difficult to follow in this release, but then that's what I like about the TV stories from this era; there's an innocence and simplicity about them! The Selachians are good villians that I have enjoyed in print before, but this is my first time of hearing them on audio (I believe they have been used in a Big Finish story before) and to be honest I didn't really like sound design for their voices, but it's got to be hard to come up with something that sounds like a talking shark in a spacesuit!

Overall, a really listenable and enjoyable Second Doctor story made by Frazer Hines' and Anneke Wills' strong performances, and one I'd recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars The intergalactic bank job 1 April 2012
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Latest Doctor Who companion chronicle. These are talking books which feature an actor who played a companion to the Doctor on tv returning to the role to read an all new story for their character.

They do all the voices save one which is read by a guest actor.

And they run for two parts, complete on one cd, each part usually running twenty five to thirty minutes each [approx].

This story actually involves two companions because the main reader is Frazer Hines - Jamie during Patrick Troughton's era on tv - and the second voice is Anneke Wills - Polly, in both the first and second Doctor's eras.

It's a two parter as usual, and each episode runs for twenty six minutes [approx].

The story sees the TARDIS crew run into a problem that many vehicle owners will be familiar with. Their vehicle gets clamped. This happens when it's outside a bank. And since the Doctor doesn't carry money, the only thing to do in order to pay the charge for the clamp to be released is to go into the bank and try and get a loan.

This being an intergalactic bank, there are science fictional elements to all of this. The story does fit in very well with the style of the tv show at the time though, and any references to clamping don't feel out of place with that.

Typical second Doctor character stuff follows as Jamie marvels at technology and the Doctor gets frustrated with officialdom.

Then they themselves in the middle of a robbery as members of an alien race called the Selachians attack. They want to get into the vault. They take hostages. Can the Doctor save the day for all concerned?
