Product Description

Review

The Seeker's Guide is aptly named. The questing reader will find an extraordinary range of insights into the deeper meanings and thematic substrata of the Harry Potter books that illuminate the magnitude of JK Rowling's achievement in responding to the spiritual void of our times. The underlying message is our alchemical capacity for transformative action, the triumph of love over fear and death, the transcendence of petty concerns and limiting beliefs. The author brilliantly illuminates the ambiguities of the human situation depicted in the novels as well as our ultimate ability to reconcile the polarities in our lives. --David Lorimer, Scientific & Medical Network

Dr. Geo Trevarthen has produced what I have to call a magical work -- scholarly but not boring, spiritual but not restricting, enlightening without being stuffy; in short, a rewarding read for anyone who may have wondered what was behind the Harry Potter phenomenon and why it reaches so deeply into our core beings. I urge you to shout, "Accio The Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter" ... I guarantee you a mind and heart opening experience awaits.

Spiritual and Wise 15 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
I approached this book with some trepidation wondering if it would be stretching its themes of philosophy, psychology, symbols and mythical aspects a bit thin but it soon becomes clear that there's plenty for Dr Trevarthen to work with. She's done an excellent job at revealing dozens of aspects of the Harry Potter books which are both subtle and powerful aspects to the plot and character development but which are almost totally invisible unless you are looking for them.
Whether or not J. K. Rowing intended this underlying depth or not (and this book is respectful in not speculating) it becomes more and more obvious that either Rowling knows a great deal more about myth, alchemy and what Joseph Campbell called 'The Hero's Journey' than she has previously let on.
I'd recommend it to any Potter enthusiast with a smidgeon of interest in spirituality or the occult - if nothing else, it will inspire you to want to read ALL the books again to find the references and understand what appears to be happening at a deeper level.

This is a really good read: both deeply informed but fun. Geo Trevarthen has revealed that much of Harry Potter's magical world is also to be found in shamanic traditions (which I always suspected). The appeal of the books and films must surely be partly due to a half-buried sense that yes, given the right conditions, magic could really work - and yes, shamanic practitioners did and still do it!

The Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter is an absolute treasure! 14 July 2008
By Christine Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you liked any of the Harry Potter stories even a smidgen, you'll thoroughly enjoy The Seeker's Guide. Well and engagingly written, this book brings together Dr. Geo Trevarthen's vast knowledge of Celtic spirituality, ritual magic, myth, and the timeless themes from spiritual traditions across the globe and through the ages to show us why Rowling's Harry Potter touches us at such a deep level.

Whether you lovingly read every book or just caught the movies, The Seeker's Guide is a delight to read and chock full of fascinating information. It's like getting your own course at Hogwarts -one that reveals how grounded this story is in ancient wisdom and, if we practice, just how we all might live the magical and mythical life.

This is not just a rehash of Potter trivia or play list of characters and events. In this book a respected expert on Celtic shamanism and spirituality, in solid overview and with thorough endnotes, explains how the many details and larger themes in the Harry Potter series are supported by the wisdom teachings of the ages.

The depth of information in the book is nicely balanced by Trevarthen's humor and deep appreciation of Rowling's work. For the spiritual seeker this book is an absolute treasure chest of esoteric wisdom lovingly wrapped up in a delightful "unauthorized course". And if you just plain loved Harry and want to learn more about why that might be, then check out this book.

I highly recommend The Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter.

Seeker's Guide a Treasure! 1 Aug 2008
By Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Geo Trevarthen's Seeker's Guide to Harry Potter is an absolute treasure. I read the "Guide" just after finishing Rowling's 7th book. Geo draws on her extensive knowledge of Celtic spirituality and myth to reveal the deep symbolism contained in the Harry Potter series. The author's thorough investigation and explanation of the elements and themes contained in the novels goes beyond other more superficial looks at the Potter books.

This insightful and humorous exploration of the Harry Potter Series is a must read for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the spiritual and mythical elements contained in the novels.

Upon finishing "The Seeker's Guide", I now plan to read the entire Potter series again with a renewed appreciation of Rowling's incorporation of history and myth within her works.

Interesting, wanders a little. 3 April 2011
By Derek Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The idea of the book is to explore Harry Potter's mystical and spiritual themes and symbols - and it does that to a great extent. However I felt that the author wandered a bit much and the book could have been better organized. Interestingly, despite the beautifully ornate cover, the book's interior is modeled on the adolescent style of Rowling's novels, which is a bit jarring. Still, a good addition to the shelf of a collector or fan.
