Product Description

Synopsis

At the age of 16, Huxley was stricken with an eye disease which left him in a state of near-blindness for many years thereafter. In 1939, in a state of exasperation, he began to practise the method of visual re-education evolved by Dr W.H. Bates. Within two months he was reading without spectacles and without eyestrain. An enthusiastic convert, Huxley wrote this book, a homage to the Bates method and a serious challenge to the orthodox medical profession.

From the Back Cover

When Aldous Huxley was sixteen years old he was stricken with a serious eye disease which left him, after many months of near-blindness with severely defective vision. Many years later, he discovered the method of visual re-education invented by Dr Bates, an American oculist. It was a discovery that revolutionised Huxley's life.
Within two months he was reading without spectacles and subsequently his vision continued to improve dramatically. In 'The Art of Seeing', Huxley not only describes the eye exercises of the Bates method (still in use today), but also explores the philosophical foundations of its effectiveness.

First published in 1943, 'The Art of Seeing' was a challenge to the scientific orthodoxy of the day.
Bates' theory of the close relationship between mental well-being and clarity of vision found the perfect champion in Huxley, whose subsequent works reflected his increasing preoccupation with the unexplored powers of the mind. A passionate argument for self-healing affording remarkable insights into Huxley' s intellectual spirit, 'The Art of Seeing' is a curious and remarkable book.

"Huxley has put so much of his personality and individual style into this book that it should interest everybody, whatever the condition of their sight."
LITERARY REVIEW

"Huxley's 'The Art of Seeing' will arouse the liveliest interest, not only among readers who are anxious to avoid, or to give up, the discomfort and nuisance of spectacles, but also among those for whom the story of how a man threatened with blindness recovered his sight has a peculiar poignancy."

Beautifully Creative 22 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
This is the first book that initiated me to natural eyesight awareness. Its a very truthful/profound book that establishes the links between the eye, brain and body. It is extremely useful if you have started the journey of letting go of your glasses

Fascinating 1 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Whether you believe in the methods put forward by Huxley, or more likely feel quite silly when trying them out, one cannot doubt that Huxley believes in what he is writing. We have become so used to 'scientific' explanations for things that it is refreshing to be told that there are alternatives. Huxley explains these alternatives brilliantly.

No more glasses on my face. 8 Dec 1998
By PaulKelt@ix.netcom.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A number of years ago, when I had a restricted license (requiring glasses); I read Mr. Huxleys book on the recommendation of a friend. After about a year of doing several of the exercises I was able to pass the motor vehicle eye exam and throw my glasses away. I lent the book to someone who needed it and it disappeared, now I am looking for another copy. As my eyes change with age I need to review it again.

Anyone losing eyesight should read this book. 8 July 1999
By Jean-Denis Bertron - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This account of Huxley's personal experience with the Bates method is enjoyable, and useful. Unlike a hoax, the method doesn't require any leap of faith or that you wear a pyramid on your head. You have to work, reflect and learn. This is perhaps why the method isn't successful with everyone. It is far easier to pay for a pair of glasses. My advice: If you get your hands on this book, read it.

Huxley was not conned, the bates method saved his sight 16 Jun 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Huxley used the bates method to save his failing eyesight. The Bates method is not a hoax. I have used it for 20 years and continue to receive many benefits. Huxley was not selling a hoax, he was sharing the truth with the public.
