Lisa Valdez's PASSION-like sex without the PASSION-like romance.

While reading this book, I had the feeling that Tiffany Clare would be better off writing erotica. If she doesn't want to do that, she needs to beef up the storyline and the romance of her HRs, not just fill the pages with sex and more sex. Here we have hero Richard Mansfield, Earl of Asbury, who at 19 marries heroine Emma Halloway, 15 at the time. (Oh, ick! This wasn't a costermonger marrying a flower seller. He's peerage and she's at least gentry and they didn't usually marry at 15 in the 1800s.) So the night of the wedding, they consummate the marriage and next day he's off to see the world without so much as a goodbye and doesn't see or get in contact with Emma for 12 years. (That's right, 12 years!)
Fast forward 12 years and he's back and decides it's time to make an heir with said wife, who, fortunately for him, has grown into quite a looker. Now, in my world, a man that inconsiderate, selfish, insensitive, unfeeling, self-centered, uncaring, and just in general a huge jerk, would have to do some really, really big-time groveling before I'd open my legs for him. Not so our heroine. She's panting after him just days after he's back in England. And they're at it like over-sexed rabbits throughout the book. Supposedly he sets out to "woo" her but apparently "wooing" for him means talking dirty to her and having sex with her as often as possible.
Oh, yes, there is more to this story. H and h have secrets. Emma took up painting after Richard deserted her and anonymously sells enough to have saved up a goodly amount of money. The strange part is her choice of subject matter. It's nude females in erotic poses, two of them being paintings of herself. Richard's dirty little secret is the way he's been making his money, in the opium trade. And we have the mystery of someone who is out to kill Richard (in addition to me, as a reader) and Emma's problem that she may be outed as the painter of nudes. And to muddy up the storyline even more we have some ha-ha moments with the heroine's two sisters, who are staying with her at the time of the story.
All in all, I recommend this book only to those who like to read sex scenes and don't look for any romance in their HRs.

I'm one of those people that looks at book covers for recommendations from romance authors that are sometimes displayed on the cover. When I saw this book and saw glowing recommendations by Lisa Kleypas and Anna Campbell for another book that this author had written, I decided to take a chance on this book, as I have read and enjoyed romance novels by both Kleypas and Campbell. After reading this book, I wonder if I was even reading the same book as Kleypas or Campbell. I'm really puzzled about all of the glowing reviews that this author's books have garnered.
I had a few problems with this book. The heroine Emma married the hero at age 15 (yuck). The hero Richard then spends the next 12 years traveling the world and deals in various businesses like opium trading. Not exactly hero-worthy actions, in my book. When they meet, there is passion but not much else. There is no chemistry that I detected between them, other than sexual energy. They don't spend much time getting to know each other. Emma wants to stay in the marriage because she wants a family, and they agree to divorce if she doesn't get pregnant in a few months. Emma and Richard then fall in love, although I can't imagine how when all they seem to do when they're together is paw at each other.
I really didn't care for Ms. Clare's style of writing. The book has a lot of run-on sentences, and a lot of things were left unexplained. Why did Richard's father choose a 15-year old for him to marry? How did Emma's friendship with the Duke of Vane start? Why did Richard wait 12 long years before trying to make the relationship with Emma work?
I picked up this book with high hopes for finding an exciting new historical romance author. Although this book isn't the worst romance that I have read, I can't recommend it either. I finished it only because I hated to waste the good money that I spent on buying it.

I really tried to finish this book, but couldn't. The writing was so bad that I couldn't put it aside in favor of what little plot there was. I'm no prude; if you want to read good erotica, pick up anything that Megan Hart has written! In this book the sex was boring, and way too detailed for my tastes in historical romances. I couldn't get past the fact that Richard had been in the opium business, and although he supposedly showed remorse for the lives he ruined, in the end the business was sold instead of dismantled (I skimmed to the end to make sure, for the purposes of this review). All in all, this book was aggravating rather than entertaining.
