Book Description

Sophie was afraid of the man in the shadows. He terrified her, but he would always disappear when someone else came. But one day in June 1984, she didn’t escape. He took her.

When a young woman is found draped over a gravestone in a chilling murder, police officer Annie Graham experiences a familiar sense of dread. A new killer is out there, and her senses tell her there is something eerily different about this case.

When she spots the little girl standing outside her window, she knows that the past is about to catch up with all of them. But can she help right the wrongs of thirty years ago, and stop the killer before it’s too late?

Helen Phifer's first novel The Ghost House has been shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists' Association Joan Hessayon Award 2014

More About the Author

Helen lives in a small town called Barrow-in-Furness with her husband and five children and has done since she was born. It gets some bad press but really is a lovely place to live. Surrounded by coastline and not far from the Lake District where she likes to spend at least one of her days off from work. She has always loved writing and reading and loves reading books which make the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. Unable to find enough scary stories to read she decided to write her own.

Her debut novel 'The Ghost House' was published by Carina UK in October 2013 and the sequel 'The Secrets of the Shadows' is due for release in April 2014.

I am so pleased that I discovered this author. I have ready both her Annie Graham books and cannot wait for the next instalment. A good British based novel. I bought the first book really for the ghosty bit, but really got into the mystery side of the book as well. Keep them coming Helen.

Unfortunately was disappointed with this book wanted to like it but felt that the characters were just unrealistic and one dimensional
Finished it but would probably not bother to read another if the series continues

1.0 out of 5 stars boring and crass 27 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I could not get into this book at all which is disappointing having read all the positive reviews. The use of language, tone and grammer was wrong such that it was a ' difficult read'. The 'accent' used by the characters is horrid I am no snob but it was very off putting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great page-turner 1 Jun. 2014

This is another thrilling read from Helen Phifer. Her speciality is accessible commercial crime fiction, with a bit of ghost-hunting thrown in, that keeps you turning the pages. I really found my heart thumping through some of the passages, and I blame Helen for sleepless nights when I was wondering what would happen next! I love the way that she weaves the seemingly unrelated strands of her story together. Her central character Annie Graham is a likeable and believable crime fighter who always ends up getting herself into trouble. Annie is sassy in her professional life, but emotionally vulnerable in her private life, and her troubled relationship with her boyfriend is just as intriguing as the main plot. As well as being an author, Helen works in the police force. This shows in the seamless but authoritative way that police procedure and station life are woven into the book. A good read for fans of the genre.
