For some reason books on producing dance music are few and far between. Before I got this I'd read - and enjoyed - Rick Snoman's "Dance Music Manual", which I still recommend to people who want a great starting (or intermediate) guide to producing dance music.

But for a specific book dedicated to making house tracks this ticks every box.

I like its informal style and there are lots of hints and tips which I found really useful. Chapters are dedicated to everything from the kick drum to mixing vocals. I wonderd if not all recent styles would be covered, but there are pages dedicated to electro, tech and nu-rave as well as more classic disco and soulful sounds.

I've been producing house for more than five years now and I still learned a lot - on everything from sub bass frequencies (and how to get them!) through maximising headroom to how to get the best performances from nervous vocalists.

I also like the way this book has stuff like drum programming grids, 'How To' walkthroughs for specific sounds and a 32 part 'full mix' tutorial.

At £34.95 this was at the top end of my budget, but it's well worth it --- especially with the samples thrown in.

Having produced a stack of dance music over the last 10 years or so, i certainly didnt think i'd ever be needing a book on house music production. However, i have many friends who are just starting out in this field and often come to me looking for advice on production tricks and tips. one of these guys bought the book over to my studio to get my opinion on it and all i can say is if i was starting out, this is exactly the kind book i'd want to have had around. if you are looking to make house, electro, minimal or any of those sub-genres of house music, then this will get you straight on track. what i really like is the fact that it has just enough of the essential theory and a shed load of practical walkthroughs to guide you through the process of making beats, basslines, leads and FX. My friend who first showed me the book has all but stopped bugging me with questions now, except for the odd super specific thing, so i pretty much recomend it to everyone starting out - mainly so i dont have to keep answering the same questions. one thing though is that this is a very specific book on house music, so dont expect to find anything about dubstep, breaks, drum and bass or hip hop inside.

I'd bought a few other books before finding Secrets of House, and it's a whole different thing. I found it easy to read, with the many walkthroughs easy to follow - with pictures for each stage to show how to make lots of different sounds and techniques. With the samples included you can get making tunes straight away.

As far as audience goes, this would be a good book for those starting out, but probably even better for those who've made a few tunes but want to push their production to the next level.

There's also some really interesting chapters from people who make tunes full time for a living with some cool business and production tips.

I loved this book. It is at the top end in terms of price of this kind of book, but I'd happily have this over three of my previous buys.
