Book Description

Step back into the magical world of Pendleford with Sarah Painter’s new book The Secrets of Ghosts. Don’t miss the magical, heart-warming story from the bestselling author of The Language of Spells!

On her twenty-first birthday Katie Harper has only one wish: to become a real Harper woman. Mystical powers are passed down her family generation after generation – some even call them witches – yet every spell Katie attempts goes disastrously wrong.

When her magic does appear, it’s in a form nobody expected and suddenly Katie is thrown into a dangerous new world with shadowy consequences. For the realm of the deceased is not as peaceful as she once thought. The dead are buried with their secrets and only Katie can help the ghosts of the past finally find peace.

If that is what they are looking for…

'I would recommend this book as it is a real mix: it’s a love story and a thriller with a dash of magic thrown in for good measure.' - Laura's Book Review

'I really loved this book – and it is not often I say this, really. An amazing début, I was sucked in so much I could hardly put it down and finished it in about a day I think. I also couldn’t stop talking about it! That is it’s charm and the skill of the writer, you can’t quite put your finger on what it is… I hope to read more in the future by this author.' - Beloved Eleanor

utterly enchanting’ - The Madwoman in the Attic

'an enjoyable, escapist read, light hearted romance and a bit of paranormal who dunnit.' - Jeannie Zelos

'I thoroughly enjoyed The Secret of Ghosts. It was just as magical and just as enjoyable as The Language of Spells and I am soooooo glad Sarah Painter decided to go back to Pendleford. ... I really do love magical fiction and I think SarahPainter is one of the best at giving you a realistic look at magic and all that comes with it.' - Chick Lit Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it in a day 14 Jun. 2014
By Alexa P
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading 'The Language of Spells' and realising there was a sequel, I bought this in preparation for my birthday spa day - and couldn't put it down.

I was instantly gripped by Katie's story, and her journey to become one of the "infamous Harper women" and thoroughly enjoyed following both her development and catching up with Gwen and Cam and their lives. A little bit darker, perhaps, than the previous story in the series, Sarah Painter has again perfected the balance of romance, magic and suspense in 'The Secrets of Ghosts.'

Thoroughly enjoyed it, and thoroughly recommend it, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great novel from Sarah Painter 23 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
First off, let me show some serious cover appreciation! That cover is stunning! Carina always have such beautiful covers!

I previously read Sarah's debut, The Language of Spells and loved it, so was thrilled when she released her second novel The Secrets of Ghosts. Although this is a stand alone novel to The Language of Spells, we get to revisit some of the same characters and I was delighted to go back to Pendleford with Gwen and Katie.

Katie plays the main role in The Secrets of Ghosts and I really liked her as a character as I was able to relate to her in some ways, but not her ethereal abilities of course! We still get to revisit Gwen's story but The Secrets of Ghosts is written seven years later, so Katie is older and hoping to discover her place among the famous Harper women. But Katie is having problems and feels like she is never going to discover her power.

I always manage to get really into Sarah's stories and this one was just so easy to get swept along in. Also like before, I really like the magic element in this. It is more prominent in this one than The Language of Spells and I enjoyed it for this. And it also has a more paranormal twist to it, which made for some gripping reading!

I loved the romance element in this. It had a sweetness to it, even if Katie was holding back a little, which we begin to understand the further we read. I liked how it wasn't heavy stuff as I think I have read far too much of that recently so this actually felt refreshing.

Sarah's writing and dialogue also made me chuckle as she makes the characters so different from each other. Even though Katie is quite reserved, she does come out with some funny rude things; completely different from Gwen.

A really nice, light read that you can easily pick up and lose yourself in.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun paranormal adventure 27 Feb. 2014

The Secret of Ghosts. Sarah Painter
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
I didn't realise this was a follow on from book one The Language of Spells, which I've not read. It was still fairly easy to understand, though if I’d read book one some of the conversations would have stood in better context instead of my having to read between the lines. My bad...Still, it was an enjoyable, escapist read, light hearted romance and a bit of paranormal who dunnit. I didn't guess how things would turn out, that came as a pleasant surprise, I do enjoy books that can impress me plot wise with how things work out. So many are just predictable and though that works mostly, when the endings are different to what I expect it adds to the reading experience.
I liked Katie, she's so determined to be a success within the family and so frustrated at the lack of magic so far, that when the ghosts start turning up she sees benefits and a purpose for her, disregarding potential dangers. That can have a drastic effect on her and the family. Max, he was an enigma much of the while, and there was a very subtle, gentle romance building between him and Katie, which was fun and made for a change from the insta love of so many novels. (though I like those as well, properly done, just its good to have variety) Priced at £3.99 for 279 pages its long enough to let the reader get really into the plot. Its not one of those breath holding, heart stopping, peeping round the pages books but more a gentle meander though an adventure, with a side of romance. Though its connected to book one, its a complete novel in itself. I’d certainly be ready to read more from Katie and the family and friends.
Stars: Three and a half, good gentle story.

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable 27 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second book Sarah Painter has written concerning the Harper family.

I enjoyed the first story "the language of spells" but I have to say that I liked this one the best.

An enjoyable mix of the supernatural, love, mystery and magic. With likeable characters and an interesting story which is very easy to read.

Would recommend for a light hearted summer read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel 25 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Secrets of Ghosts is the follow up to last year's The Language of Spells.

The Language of Spells was an accomplished debut, and 'Secrets...' builds on that positive beginning with a tautly plotted and well realised story populated with believable and likeable characters. With shades of Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman looking approvingly over her shoulder, Sarah Painter has joined a select group of writers who can tell a great story well, using the best traditions of speculative fiction and fantasy.

A very enjoyable novel and highly recommended.
