Book Description

30 Aug 2007

Young, fiery and bright, Eshlaini has her whole future ahead of her – until her father condemns her to a life of spinsterhood.

Joyce has settled into Malaysian life after thirty years as an ex-pat wife – or so she thinks, until a newcomer arrives and reveals just how little of her home she knows.

Jade Moon wants the best for her family – but, surrounded by Americans who reject her Korean traditions, she must first work out what ‘the best’ means.

Though cultures and distances separate them, their experiences reflect our universal fears and desires. From a breathtaking island off Singapore to upstate New York and France, Kim Edwards takes in the world, compassionately and gracefully exploring the obstacles of time, place and circumstance in all of our quests for love, happiness and acceptance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable. 13 Mar 2009
Not a fan of short stories as I'm usually left feeling nothing for the characters but this collection is simply wonderful. Very well written and great stories for men or women. Thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich Cutural Flavours 15 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fourteen beautifully crafted short stories from the author of The Memory Keeper's Daughter. Kim Edwards taught in Asia for five years, in Malaysia, Japan, and Cambodia. Her experience in those countries richly flavours the prose, The Secrets of a Fire King, the eighth story in the book. The reader is taken on a tour of quirky human foibles, disenchantment, and entrenched cultural traditions. Edwards, makes time and place leap from the pages with her stories of Eshlaini, Jade Moon, and Joyce. For those who enjoy reading short stories, this collection is one not to pass by.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection 15 Jan 2011
I don't tend to read collections of short stories, finding that only a select few writers have been successful with developing rounded characters and a situation in such short space and context that I could care about, that I was interested in what happened to. Kim Edwards is now one of those writers. Each story had a strong ability to stand alone with a beginning, middle and end, strong characterisations and a story that engaged the reader, that built a sense of suspense right until the last few lines. Each story has a similiar theme, the preparation and run up to a climax or major decision of each of the characters and how they react to this.

The stories, i agree with a previous reviewer, are suitable for both men and women - Edwards is a writer that can appeal universally.

1.0 out of 5 stars Short stories 28 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for our book group as we had read the previous book written by Kim Edwards, and thoroughly enjoyed it. What we didn't realise was this book was actually short stories. Most of the members of our group didn't manage to read all of the stories as they didn't particularly enjoy the first few, so gave up.
