More About the Author

Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, FBANT, CHNC pioneers new approaches to health and nutrition. He is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (Europe's leading training centre for nutritional therapists), is Chief Executive of the Food for the Brain Foundation and the author of over 30 books.

He is widely regarded as Britain's best-selling author and leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health issues, hence being frequently quoted in national newspapers from the Daily Mail to the Guardian. Patrick is also popular on radio shows and national television as a presenter, interviewer and guest.

Patrick started his academic career in the field of psychology. While completing his bachelor degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of York, he researched the role of nutrition in mental health and illness. He became a student of the late Dr Carl Pfeiffer, director of Princeton's Brain Bio Center, and later a student of Dr Abram Hoffer, Director of the International Schizophrenia Foundation in Canada, who were leading the field in mental health and nutrition. In 1980 he started treating mental health patients with nutritional medicine.

In 1984 Patrick founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), a charitable and independent educational trust for the furtherance of education and research in nutrition. Today, ION is the largest training school in the UK offering a diploma course in nutritional therapy and is widely respected as a leading edge organisation by professionals and media alike. Patrick formed a relationship with the late Dr Linus Pauling, who became the Patron of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition.

In 1986, Patrick started researching the effects of nutrition on intelligence, collaborating with Gwillym Roberts, a headmaster and student at ION. This culminated in a randomised controlled trial testing the effects of improved nutrition on children's IQ - an experiment that was the subject of a Horizon documentary and published in the Lancet in 1988. This study was the first of its kind in the world and considerably raised awareness of the role of nutrition in intelligence.

During his years as director of ION, Patrick ran many educational campaigns that brought attention to the importance of zinc and pyrolluyria, disglycaemia, antioxidants, methylation and homocysteine, IgG food allergies, essential fats in mental health - factors still greatly underestimated in the treatment of mental illness. Patrick retired as Director of ION in 1997 to focus on writing, teaching and researching.

Patrick was awarded an honorary Diploma from ION and is also an Honorary Fellow of BANT (the British Association of Nutritional Therapists), and a Member of CHNC (The Complementary and Natural
Healthcare Council). In 2003 he founded the Brain Bio Centre at ION, a treatment centre pioneering the optimum nutrition approach for mental health, to formalise the treatment of mental health with nutrition and to act as a research centre. The Brain Bio centre is owned by the Food for the Brain Foundation, a registered education charity set up by Patrick to promote awareness of the link between learning, behaviour, mental health and nutrition. In 2007, Patrick was appointed Patron of South African Association for Nutritional Therapy, and in 2014 he was inducted onto the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame.

Patrick lectures and conducts workshops throughout the world on a wide range of topics, to the public, health professionals and the medical profession. In the UK he presents around 50 workshops and lectures a year. His knowledge, personality and enthusiasm, together with his strong scientific approach, helps him to stimulate lively debates, simplifying complex issues and help the public and professionals expand their understanding of health issues. Patrick is frequently involved in government campaigns and debates concerning optimum nutrition.

This is a great cookery book - if you eat the low GL way every recipe has its GL score but also scores for other nutritional markers so its really useful to help you make sure you get the right levels of antioxidants, B vitamins etc. Delicius food too!

I like Patrick Holford and find his books accessible and informative so having purchased 10 secrets of healthy ageing I wanted the recipes that underpin his ideas of healthy eating. This is quite an expensive book and only half of it is given over to recipes, so I was a bit disappointed. The recipes themselves are good and clear to follow.

Although some of the recipes in this book challenge a restricted budget, I found the recipes simply gorgeous! They are really simple to put together and they use lots of very different ingredients. This in turn encourages the reader/eater to move away from the norm and have a go at making sumptuous dishes that not only taste good but look good too. Since I began using Patrick and Fiona's recipes my eyes and taste buds have been opened to inumerable delights.
I love the nutritional info, low allergy info, and gl info for each recipe. The book is bendy so it fits into my keep clean recipe holder nicely and the pictures enable the reader to see what delights are in store for them.
Most of all I really love the way that these recipes are not only guilt free, but THEY ARE POSITIVELY GOOD FOR YOU!

Forget your cheap "Rocky Road" with lashings of nasty sugar, try "Chocolate Crunchies", full of goodness and not damaging to your health.
"Chicken and Puy Lentils" done in the slow cooker is just the bees knees at the end of the day.
This is a book for any age bracket, but it certainly makes growing older much more fun and exciting. Eating like this from as soon as possible can seriously enhance your eating experience!!!
I've lost six stones and reversed my diabetes using Patrick and Fiona's recipes so I cannot praise them highly enough.
I LOVED IT!!!
(saying all that, this book still has not made me like artichokes, Yuk)

Ps does anybody know which came first, the celeriac or the ood??? They both look like each other don't you think???

Having tried patrick holfords vitamin tablets and got his book, secrets of healthy aging, the next logical move was the cookbook. Easy to follow recipes, with scores for omega 3 and GL count. If you are trying his diet this is a good book to have, with many varied recipes and with lots of tips and extra information about how much food you should have and why you should have it. My daughter is diabetic and has found his books to be extremely helpful. I am not diabetic but have found I feel better and have increased energy if I follow the diet, losing weight is nice too.

I really enjoy this book!! Very interesting regarding both nutrition and recipes part! It makes you understand what your body needs, the quantity, what elements you find in some food that are good for you, which is better for you and which is not. the recipes looks nice, there are not pictures for all of them but then, you to be creative with presentation. I would recommend this book to anyone who want to learn more about nutrition and to cook regards the real needs of your body.

i was looking forward to a proper cook book. But only half of the book had them. Plus, i actually though it would finally have some photographs, but i found that only 1 in every 4 recipes had one. i tend to like cookbooks which have few photos for EACH recipe.

Arrived promptly - a great book with some very simple, tasty healthy recipes. I would recommend the pumpkin soup! The book details the health benefits of each recipe very clearly and explains how and why certain foods are good for us.
