Product Description

When Tintin stumbles across a model ship at the Old Street Market, he buys it as a gift for his friend Captain Haddock. But this isn't just any old model ship... it's the Unicorn, built by one of Haddock's ancestors, and it holds a clue to finding the treasure of a notorious pirate.

No doubt to capitalise on the upcoming film release of Tintin, the UK publishers have reissued the whole classic series in new format paperbacks. In terms of content this is a fabulous story, the first in a magnificent two parter along with Red Rackham's Treasure, and I'd give it (along with virtually all the other Tintin stories) the full five stars.

However, caveat emptor when it comes to these editions. If I were you I'd get down to a bookshop and physically LOOK at this book in comparison with the original version and see if you want it. Okay, so in these new editions you get extra info printed in the back on the background to the story and with interesting info on Herge and his work. However, this book is actually SMALLER than the original. Perhaps my son and I have got too used to the originals, but the pictures and writing in all of these new editions are just too small for our tastes. I can imagine many a young reader finding it all too much of a stress and a strain on the eyes. And of course if you make the pictures smaller, it's that much harder to appreciate the skill and beauty of them.

A more general gripe I have is in the covers of these new editions. Herge chose and drew the covers of his 'albums' with great care, and the best of them really do 'sell' the books to a prospective reader in every sense. These covers seems to be images taken from frames within the text, and while reasonable care seems to have been taken in their choice, they don't work at all for me. Herge got it right first time. Why find fault with genius?

Book arrived in good time as this was a gift. Prefer the older style look especially compared to the books illustrated from the recent film.

I've read the books when I was young , I've seen the original films and now I've seen the most recent film which spurred me on to buy the wole collection . I can't wait till I have all the books so my kids can read them.
