Review

'excellent...wholly convincing and always interesting...an outstanding biography'

(The Scotsman 20090927)

'[Hastings] provides a searing emotional history...her closing chapter...is so powerfully written, in places so shocking, as to give a series of physical jolts to the reader. Hastings's book cannot be bettered'

(Sunday Telegraph, Richard Davenport-Hines 20090927)

'One of the fascinating pleasures of this superb biography [is] to see the veils being stripped away and the messy truth about Maugham's life and relationships exposed...Hastings recounts the mass of detail and the massive literary output with great sagacity and the sharpest of eyes'

(The Guardian, William Boyd 20090927)

'[Hasting's] superior, marvellously rich synthesis of so many resources...produces a narrative that is strikingly clear yet never reductive. It's a gripping, often sensational account of a singular life, gaining pathos in its closing descriptions of the senile Maugham's manipulations by Searle'

(The Independent, Richard Canning 20090927)

'The places and people she describes are portrayed with such graphic clarity and assurance. She sets a scene or establishes a personality with great economy and intensity'

(The Observer, William Boyd 20090927)

'Engrossing...a brilliant evocation'

(Financial Times Weekend, Jackie Wullschlager 20090926)

'A remarkable book, sympathetic and sardonic, comic and tragic, serious and naughty'

(Telegraph Review, Michael Bloch 20090926)

'Selina Hastings has done an excellent job...Hastings has managed to humanise Maugham without ever attempting to gloss over his defects... Her characterisations are sharp, her judgement sound and her grasp of narrative as sure as her subject's,' (Evening Standard 20090926)

'Hastings has teased out the complicated chronicle...and offers a fuller picture then ever of [Maugham]'

(The Independent, John Walsh 20090926)

'The best parts of Hasting's engrossing book are her descriptions of Maugham as a young literary man on the make...a sensitive and sympathetic biography'

(The Sunday Times (Culture), Robert Harris 20090911)

'Her [Selina Hasting's] admirable new book,'

(Independent on Sunday, Sholto Byrnes 20090911)

'An outstanding biography...replete with insights and asides, perceptive synopses and analyses of the work and, for those who want it, an abundance of salacious scurrility, this is a tale that would have held Maugham's attention from start to finish'

(The Irish Times, Robert O'Byrne 20090911)

'This steady-eyed biography of an extraordinary, extravagant, generous and bitter artist will not only fascinate its readers but encourage some to go to his work for the first time'

(Times Literary Supplement, Jeremy Treglown 20090911)

'Every so often, a biography appears of such authority and such power that it is more than a chronicle of a human life, it is a work of art...brilliant...such is Selina Hasting's skill that this horrible story is richly enjoyable'

(Reader's Digest, A. N. Wilson 20090911)

'Selina Hastings' excellent biography, perceptive, well-written and with a happy turn of phrase'

(The Spectator, Juiet Townsend 20090911)

'Hastings narrates it with relish and fairness, in roughly equal proportions, giving somewhat dutiful space to Maugham's literary achievements before excitedly leaping back into the fray of greed, sex and violence'

(The Mail on Sunday, Craig Brown 20090911)

'Hasting's talent as a biographer is to create three-dimensional novelists...her Life of Maugham is pitch-perfect: supple, confident and written with something of the same beady detachment (and enjoyable signature streak of malice) as the great tale-teller himself'

(The Daily Telegraph, Telegraph Review, Nicholas Shakespeare 20090911)

' All this is chronicled brilliantly by Selina Hastings, whose research, empathy and style cannot be faulted...an impressively perceptive and often moving account of an extraordinarily interesting man'

(Literary Review (Diana Athill) 20090911)

'A biographer who is second to none...The result is nothing less than a triumph...Hastings shares some of her subject's best literary attributes...Be warned: once picked up, this excellent biography is impossible to put down,'

(The Herald 20090911)

'Well written, continuously interesting, generous and fair'

(Standpoint, Alan Massie 20090911)

'The strength of Hasting's book lies in its refusal to simplify a complex man'

(Intelligent Life, Peter Beech 20090911)

'A definitive biography...,'

(Saga Magazine 20090911)

'If anyone can bring clarity to this complex man it is this most lucid and perceptive of biographers' (Bookseller 20090911)

Praise for EVELYN WAUGH by Selina Hastings

'Perceptive, witty and beautifully written'

(Daily Mail 20090911)

(Daily Telegraph 20090911)

'Entertaining, delightful and rewarding . . . The narrative is at once gripping and thoughtful on every page'

(Mail on Sunday 20090911)

Product Description

'Somerset Maugham? If anybody ever sold their soul to the devil, he did, and with sizzling relish!' Stephen Tennant, in a letter to Hugo Vickers

For nearly sixty years Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was one of the most famous writers in the world, and yet his personal life was largely kept hidden. An enormously successful playwright and the author of over a hundred short stories and twenty-one novels - several of which, Of Human Bondage, Cakes and Ale and The Razor's Edge, are now established classics - Maugham early became an expert at concealment. Predominantly homosexual, Maugham made a disastrous marriage to Syrie Wellcome, although deeply in love with the charming but dissolute Gerald Haxton. It was partly to escape his wife that Maugham undertook the extensive journeys in the Far East that inspired so many of his memorable short stories. A talented linguist, during both world wars Maugham worked for British Intelligence. In between he moved in literary and theatrical circles in London, New York and Hollywood and entertained lavishly at his luxurious villa in the south of France. Outwardly his life was richly rewarding, but privately he suffered anguish from an unrequited love affair and a shocking final betrayal.

Acclaimed biographer Selina Hastings has had access to Maugham's extensive private correspondence as well as to important family testimony, which sheds a fascinating new light on this complex and extraordinary man.

Brilliant 16 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
I bought this biography on the basis of the superb reviews it had recieved in the press without really knowing too much about Somerset Maugham. I was not disappointed, I can't recall reading a better biography ever and I have read many.

Maugham was a fascinating charcater hugely successful both critically and commercially as a writer of plays, short stories and novels in the first half of the twentieth centuary though he seems to have dropped of the radar in recent decades. He was gayer than a 1970's San Francican bathouse at a time when it was illegal, had a string of lovers, mainly male, but with time to fit in a marriage from hell and a spell as a secret agent for the British government.

This is a brilliantly told story of a fascinating man and life, it has that great quality of being both erudite and easy to read. Even if you have little interest in Somerset Maugham to start with you will thoughly enjoy the book as has all the readability of a great novel. Can't recommend it too highly.

This is a beautifully crafted and detailed story about a fascinating man. Totally bi-sexual, and with no embarassment about his preferences, he lived a life of luxury and privelige whilst producing a huge body of work - some of it quite controversial. It seems amazing that in the times when homosexuality was illegal, he got away with having a string of male lovers, and also managed to seduce a number of attractive women. Apart from his debauchery, he was able to record his travels in most places of the world, in particular the Far East, and his travel writing was as highly regarded as his plays and novels. Despite his personal life, he numbered amongst his friends Winston Churchill and H G Wells and combined his literary life with that of a secret agent during the war. Extraordinary, and so very well written. A long book, but a pleasure to read.

unputdownable 30 Oct 2009

Was very much looking forward to this book, expecting it would provide interesting company for a couple of weeks: it was so completely enthralling, that I could barely put it down and finished it in 3 days. Selina Hastings gives the life of Somerset Maugham a grandeur which -on this evidence- it surely deserves. A grandeur derived from Maugham's unprecedented worldwide success as a writer, but derived also from the desolating anguish that so often attached to his private emotional existence, (much of which, at the time, had to be concealed and suppressed.) Hastings, as a biographer, is very self-effacing, cool in her assessments, and almost never intrudes between her reader and the life being described.

The history of Somerset Maugham's disrupted childhood, tortured marriage, and sometimes tormented sexual relationships, is not short of the kind of pain and unresolvable dilemmas that Maugham frequently depicts in his novels and stories, (and which are arguably his chief theme.) "He was a fearfully emotional man, sexually", one woman said. In Hastings' account of this life, the fame and wealth he achieved through his literary success provided satisfactions he enjoyed, but, particularly towards the end of his life, they became a two-edged sword.

It is thrilling to read about Maugham's purposeful determination, as a young man, to succeed as a writer, first with his plays and then with the stories and novels. Hastings describes his later journeys to imperial outposts such as Malaya, in search of literary ideas, with an absorbing sense of adventure. Maugham's eventful life covered almost a century and it feels almost epic, but it has to be said that the end of this story is heartbreaking stuff, very disturbing, leaving this reader at least, with a sense of disquiet.
