Product Description

Product Description

The Secret Lives of Saints paints a troubling portrait of an extreme religious sect. These zealous believers impose severe and often violent restrictions on women, deprive children of education and opt instead to school them in the tenets of their faith, defy the law and move freely and secretly over international borders. They punish dissent with violence and even death. No, this sect is not the Taliban, but North America's fundamentalist Mormons.

Daphne Bramham explores the history and ideas of this surprisingly resilient and insular society, asking the questions that surround its continued existence and telling the stories of the men and women whose lives are so entwined with it—both the leaders and the victims.

Cold hard facts on polygamous sect in Canada 20 Oct 2011
By Helga Zeiner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Daphne Bramham has complied an incredible amount of facts about "the shame of British Columbia". I have used this book as a basis for all my reasearch on Bountiful and applaud the author for her amazing work. This book has inspired many and will be instrumental in the eventual downfall of Winston Blackmore.

really!? 26 Dec 2011

The LDS Mormon that reviewd this book obviously didn't read this book. The author clearly makes the distinction when the discussion is pertaining to LDS and to the FLDS. It is also discussed that neither one thinks the other is the true Mormon church.

But for the sake of argument, lets just say we all did as this Mormon suggests and we all went out and "checked out" the mainstream LDS church. What exactly would we find? A huge delegation of people that are NOT following the examples of their most famous and founding prophet, Joseph Smith (not that the FLDS does either because that means they would have to practice both polyandry and polygamy) as was supposedly dictated to J. Smith by God himself (or at least by an angel of God)? Special eyeglasses that translate ancient text into English? Seeing stones that when put into a hat and fit snugly around your face allow you to see the past and the future and whatever God wants to show you? Native Americans that are white as snow and come from Jerusalem? The Garden of Eden in Northwest Missouri? ..........really

Quite frankly I find the FLDS much more fun to read about. All the same crap but with polygamy included. Sad state of affairs but good reading.

Excellent book, great author, well researched and very enlightening!

The author of this book presents a compelling, accurate and dispassionate review of the lives of the Mormon polygamous group in Bountiful British Columbia
