Reviews

A Technicolor gem based on the James Thurber novel that stands as Danny Kayes single most memorable film showcase. Walter Mitty, the bashful, hen-pecked protagonist played by Kaye, is a mild mannered magazine editor who escapes from his dull, dreary reality in daydreams where he incarnates various swashbuckling heroes including an RAF fighter ace, a brave sea captain, a riverboat gambler, a virtuosic surgeon who come to life in spectacular sequences. But reality and dreams collide when a mystery damsel in distress-glamorous Virginia Mayo-turns to Walter Mitty for help, embroiling him in a real cloak-and-dagger thriller of a struggle with various villains including all-time baddie Boris Karloff hot on his trail, bent on recovering an elusive secret notebook... This is classic entertainment at its best, an unsurprising result when you combine Norman Mcleod-veteran director of such comic icons as the Marx Brothers Horsefeathers, Monkey Business, W. C. Fields Its a Gift, or Cary Grant Topper-and the multi-talented Danny Kaye. PIM

4.0 out of 5 stars I wake up dreaming. 17 Feb 2013
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is directed by Norman Z. McLeod and adapted loosely to screenplay by Ken Englund and Everett Freeman from the short story of the same name written by James Thurber. It stars Danny Kaye, Virginia Mayo, Boris Karloff, Fay Bainter, Thurston Hall, Ann Rutherford, Konstantin Shayne and Gordon Jones. A Technicoor production with music by Sylvia Fine (songs) and David Raskin (score) and cinematography by Lee Garmes.

Milquetoast Walter Mitty (Kaye) escapes the incessant needling of those around him by dreaming up exciting adventures for himself. Upon meeting gorgeous Rosalind van Hoorn (Mayo) he gets thrust into a real adventure involving Dutch treasure, but this is real stuff and his life is under threat!

A lovely Danny Kaye vehicle full of neatly constructed comedy, pleasant tunes and Technicolor supreme. It's too long at ten minutes shy of two hours, and non Kaye fans are unlikely to be converted, but for the fans this is a delightful way to spend an afternoon as the spy plot unfolds in a whirl of energised malarkey. Karloff a bonus as well. 7/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fun 24 Dec 2007
Format:DVD
One of the funniest movies movies I have ever seen, good old fashioned clean fun. I highly recommend watching this movie, even if you are not a fan of classic cinema. Look out for the tea cup and the dog biscuits, both have many people in tears from laughing so much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrong stars 5 Aug 2012
Format:VHS Tape
Why does this review state that Walter Mitty starred Laurance Olivier and Merle Oberon.. Surely this was Wuthering Heights made in 1938? This had nothing to do with the wonderful Walter Mitty, although this also was a great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun movie! 17 May 2005
Format:DVD
Walter Mitty (played by Danny Kaye) is an inveterate daydreamer - henpecked by his mother, unregarded by his fiancé, and abused by his boss. But, when a man is murdered in his presence, Walter soon finds himself protecting a beautiful woman and running from a group of ruthless hoodlums, and nobody believes that this isn't just another daydream. Now, all that Walter has to do is hold onto his sanity and save that girl! [Color, released in 1947, with a running time of 1 hour, 50 minutes.]
This is a fun movie! Any Danny Kaye (1913-87) movie is worth seeing, and this one is doubly so. It has Danny's great hijinks and his wonderful off kilter singing. I liked the storyline and all of the antics, and the fact that the whole family could sit down and laugh along to this great comedy. If you like good comedy, and want something family-friendly, then you can't do better than this movie - buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic comedy 11 July 2011
Format:DVD
Danny Kaye in one of his most memorable movies, the dreamy, clumsy, but talented employee suddenly plunging into
the dangers - and temptations - of real life. His facial expressions and use of voice are very funny. A movie from
"the Golden Age" of film comedy!
