Amazingly Readable 30 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
I just finished reading The Secret Life of Husbands, and I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewer's positive comments. I am a 24-year old reader of Sophie Kinsella, Katie Fforde, Joanna Trollope and Helen Dunne, and I feel this book offers a fresh, exciting, humourous and tense insight into the life of a new wife surrounded by her husband's old friends ... and then there is that terrible mother-in-law. The book climaxes in a confrontation that left me shaking with excitement. Intrigued? You will have to read it!

Relatable Fun! 15 Mar 2007
Format:Hardcover
I found this novel very relatable - not only because it was set in Oxford (which did add to the enjoyment as i recognized all the restarants and bars!) - but also because Ruth's dilemma is very realistic and strikes close to home. She has just married a gorgeous man, but soon finds that his group of friends are cliquey and Ruth slowly starts to feel like an outcast from all their private jokes and uni life stories. But there's one female friend that Ruth feels particularly intimidated and threatened by. Crawford manages to capture the irrational, insecure feeling that most girls (and guys) go through when in a relationship. The fear that one person will ruin your relationship, even if you have no solid proof.

Not only is Ruth struggling to fit in with her husbands friends, she finds it hard to get along with his batty mother, who continues to act stranger every time she visits.

This was a fun, frothy book, although at times serious and heartwarming. Definitely one to ease the insecurities of a relationship!

An OK read 15 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
I didn't like some of the charcaters in this book..in particular Erin..so it changes my opinion of the story....I prefer to either like the character or feel part of general dislike for the character. The whole was a good enough read and the bizarre mother in law was worth reading about..but I felt the main character, Ruth, was a bit wet, didn't have enough get up and go in her, didn't stand up for herself.

I really enjoyed this novel set in Oxford, an intruiging dissection of the forces, sometimes destructive, that bind friends together, and the way that appearances can be deceptive. Read more
