In a spirited clash of wills and customs, Judith reveled in the melting bliss of Iain's searching kisses, his passionate caresses. Perplexed by her sprightly defiance, bemused by her tender nature, Iain felt his soul growing into the light and warmth of her love. Surely nothing would wrench her from the affection and trust of Iain and his clan... not even the truth about her father, a devastating secret that could shatter the boldest alliance, and the most glorious of loves!

I read this book after seeing other readers' recommendations and was not disapponted. If you like your hero strong, moody but sensitive, and your heroine feisty and beautiful, you won't go far wrong with this tale set in mediaeval Scotland. I found the fact that the author has no pretentions to historical exactitude, quite refreshing. Aside from the childbirth scene, historical references are sketchily drawn in, and then only supplied as the backdrop to the main action. Anyway, too much fussy detail would interfere with the emphasis on the burgeoning relationship between hero and heroine, which is really what this book is about and what most readers are interested in. I found myself looking forward to each subsequent scene between Judith and Iain, and gladly these were not far apart, and things get hotter as the book progresses. If I have any criticism, it would be that (as another reviewer has already commented), the author tends to use "quit" rather a lot, which grates on English readers. However, Ms Garwood has chosen to write in a modern idiom which the reader must respect. But my overall enjoyment was not spoiled by this minor point. So - all you students of history out there - switch your brains off and relax with this enjoyable bit of escapism!
