Product Description

Infamous Nazi war criminal Dr Aribert Heim carried out grotesque, sadistic medical experiments on Jewish prisoners at the Mauthausen concentration camp, including the removal of human organs without anaesthetic, decapitating one murdered prisoner and using the skull as an exhibit, and even removing the tattooed flesh from another victim to make seat coverings for the camp commandant's private flat. Alerted of his imminent arrest in 1962, Heim disappeared. Alleged sightings followed over the folloiwing years in Egypt, Uruguay, Chile and Spain. Here, for the first time, is the dramatic true story of how a clandestine organisation operating outside of international law tracked down the 'Butcher of Mauthausen' and assassinated him. A secretive cell called 'The Owl' comprised if Vietnam War veterans and ex-secret agents, was created by a former concentration camp prisoner who later became a wealthy oil magnate and deciated an unlimited budget to eliminating Nazis who had fled justice after World War II.

Avoid this book - it is very poorly written and goes round in circles. Had high hopes but like the book cover the narrative is full of holes !!

This is a difficult book to review because doubts about its authenticity arise from the very first page. It is either pure fiction where the author has labelled it as a factual account of an intrepid band of vengeful Nazi hunters, in order to increase its sales; or it may just be a factual account in which case very interesting questions and moral dilemmas arise.

After finishing the book I would opt for the former probability, the book reads like a script from the next major Hollywood blockbuster, what with all its high tech equipment, drugging of bad guys, spying, the high speed boat crash and all! If it is fiction, it is quite a compelling read, but one which is often confusing as one reconnaissance blurs into another and the flow of events is a little disjointed at times.

On the other hand if this book is genuine, I'm not sure I feel comfortable with the group's flagrant disregard for the sovereignty of various countries, the disrespect for the local authorities (mainly border police) and the very ethos of their self-appointed "mission". I do not at all condone the actions of the Nazis during the Second World War, indeed it is impossible for me to describe coherently the loathing and revulsion I feel for these murderers and butchers. I also feel repulsed by the actions of various governments who either welcomed these fleeing Nazis with open arms or turned a blind eye to their presence. Yet, I cannot find it in myself to support the actions of this group `The Owl'. The Nazis should have been brought to justice through the courts of the country in which they resided at the time of their capture. If the national Government did not want to know, then this group should have used their resources and resolve in order to embarrass the country into taking appropriate action before the global community by using the media and raising awareness through public campaigning.

This is quite a fanciful book and I've no doubt at all that it will benefit from very high sales due to its content. It was spoilt for me as it isn't possible to authenticate the veracity of the account. If you are going to read this, then do so with a very open mind and a large pinch of salt.

Just dont even consider this book as a read. Cannot beleive I bought this fictional account of a lie pertaining to be true. From the word go I felt completely lied to, I also felt as though it was written in the confidence that whomever read it would beleive it and thus the author got a little carried away. If the book was written well it could perhaps pass as a Hollywood script "based" on mildly beleivable eye-witness accounts of some events that possibly may have happened. I wanted to read it through to the end but I ran out of will power. I cannot express just how un-beleiveble this book is. I have read tons of fiction more beleiveble than this, yeah that is a silly statement, but thats the only way I can describe this book. Its like a very badly written James Bond novel. . . . . no actually I take that back, its not even that convincing. Completely phony wrapped up in an overly enthusiastic narrative. At best a "tall tale" poorly told. I would also list the whole catalogue of inconsistencies and contradictions throughout the story but that may spoil the read for any unlucky purveyors who may decide to waste some money!

Never judge a book by its cover
I bought this book because it had a swastika on the cover and said 'true story' so I thought it would be my kind of thing... not that I'm a Nazi just interested in WW2. Read more
