Book Description

The third book in John Fardell's highly acclaimed series.

Product Description

A painfully shy old man has approached Professors Gadling, Gauntraker and Ampersand with an extraordinary archeological find: early human remains that don't fit in with anything known to science. Soon, Sam, Zara, Ben, Marcia and Adam are joining the professors on an expedition to a remote island in South-East Asia to investigate further. But the island contains a secret more astonishing than anything they could have imagined, and a dangerous, deadly enemy is on the trail . . .

Read this book with my 11 year old daughter, not having read the first two books of the series. We both really enjoyed the plot, which starts slowly then increases in pace until you just cant stop reading. This is classic childrens adventure, that can appreciated by adults (big Kids) as well. There's lots of real science thoughtfuly blended in with the fantasy and some important morals, but the real strength of this book is good old fashioned storytelling, providing escapism for old and young. I'd highly recommend this book to those who like to read with their children.

I love the Seven Professors books for three reasons - one is that they are part set in my home town of Edinburgh, the next because the cast is always kids and the elderly, and lastly because of rip roaring non-stop action.

This third outing is very fresh and inventive, swapping Edinburgh for the Indian Ocean (or thereabouts), but has a much slower start than the proceeding two. But don't let that put you off.

Can't say much without giving away the story, but it's a great adventure in the grand old style, spiced up by removing normal parental supervision and replacing it with cranky cranks. Very empowering for the active elderly, good for kids, and with a long literary tradition.

Very enjoyable. Let's have a fourth book soon John!

We (9 year old girl and parents) have enjoyed '7 Professors' and 'Silver Turtle' together. They are breathlessly fast-paced, loads of cliff-hangers, good old-fashioned fun but bang up-to-date. Alas, this third book was a bit of a disappointment. Where the other two were moving explosively from the first couple of pages, this one took a whole 100 pages to get anywhere with the action. We are dragged through planning and prep and travel rather than getting on with the plot. The plotline itself was rather weighed down with the moral messages about the damaging attitude of human-beings to their surroundings.
If this had been the first Fardell I had read, I would not have taken the effort to look out the first two, which would have been a shame. I hope he can tighten up the plots and the pace of any future books, as he really can produce a worhtwhile modern adventure novel.
The illustrations continue to be a delight.
