This book starts from where E Buchan's bestseller,'Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman' finishes.
The book tells what happens to Minty (the main character) and Nathan, when his long-standing marriage to Rose has ended.
Elizabeth Buchan writes in an easily readable style about the problems which beset the new couple and their new family of twin boys.
In the previous book Minty seemed to hold all the Aces,leaving Rose,(Nathan's wife) looking lost,middle-aged and insecure. In 'The Second Wife', the tables have turned - Rose successfully holds down a top job while Minty is struggling with the demands of two boys, an ageing husband and difficult job.
The book is a real page-turner, and written in a lightly humorous style.
Buy the book, really enjoyable.

As a sequel to the revenge of The Middle Aged Woman this worked well. I was definitely left at the end of it wondering how it would all work out for Nathan, Minty and Rose.
Well now I know exactly how Nathan and Minty's marriage turned out. It is now some years later and they have twin sons Lucas and Felix and we learn how their marriage is working, in comparison to those of Gisela and Roger, Paige and Martin, both relationships beset with problems. As for Rose the deserted forty-something woman in the first novel, she has weathered the storm well and although she would not have chosen to be so, is an independent and successful career woman.
So what happens when the mistress becomes the wife? Still the villain of the story Minty has grown up since seducing Nathan. She is now a mature married woman with a family to consider who finds herself extremely unsettled by the fact that Nathan appears despondent about his life. Everyway Minty turns; she experiences feelings of being `second-best' in Nathan's life. Neither of them will ever be free of Rose, a constant for various reasons.
One feels sorry for Nathan as he now lives with the consequences of his passionate affair with Minty. Maybe a mistake; but one that many men have made and will continue to do so. Instead of looking forward to freedom with grown up children, he finds himself right back at the beginning again with a young family.
The marital dramas that form the essence of this story are a reflection of those that second wives face every day within the extended family unit.

I was first attracted by this book by the cover; the picture of the two women fighting was mouthwatering! It promised a bit of cat-fighting and some quite hilarious bits... oh boy, that was so wrong. I really, and I mean really!, could not find one single reason to like Minty, the husband stealing mistress and main character. The selfishness of her and the utter ignorance of her stolen husband's feelings were just a few reasons to dislike her. The whole story seems like it doesn't have a real purpose, the plot isn't great, the other people in it are more interesting than Minty and the ending is to say the least, very unexpected and leaves you feeling a bit cheated. What that all???

Great book, terrible cover
I've just finished reading The Good Wife and absolutely loved it.

I am sorry that some find Minty not to their taste, for I think she is a woman of scope and eloquence. Read more
