Book Description

21 July 2011

For two thousand years, wars have been fought, dynasties founded and great empires built on the message at the heart of Christianity - that Jesus Christ is the one true messiah.

But in modern-day Jerusalem, archaeologist Jack Cane makes a shocking discovery. A discovery that not only threatens to destroy the charismatic new Pope, but one that could shatter two thousand years of faith and challenge the very foundations of the western world.

Review

"The Irish-born author ("Snow Wolf") teeters on the edge of genius and sacrilege with this thriller about a subject known since the time of Christ. When archeologist Jack Cane discovers ancient documents that point to the existence of another messiah, he also quickly finds out that both Israeli and Catholic authorities have reason to possess, or suppress, such documents. Racked with the pain of personal loss, he meets up with an old friend, Lela, who is part of an Israeli police team investigating multiple crimes, including a cold case involving the possible murder of Cane's parents--also archeologists--20 years earlier. Some who have avoided Christian fiction or only dipped in will find this departure from the mold refreshing, even while some regular readers of Christian fiction may find certain passages revolting. Fans of Davis Bunn or Dan Brown won't bat an eye at Meade's unblinking look at the Vatican and the religious secrecy that fuels such novels. With a plot that screams, a controversial edge, and characters with attitude and something to prove, this has all the makings to be the next "Da Vinci Code"."

--"Publishers Weekly"

An utterly compelling conspiracy thriller in the tradition of Dan Brown and Glenn Cooper.

CAUTION, SOME SPOILERS BELOW

This is the first Glenn Meade book I have read. I've read a number of conspiracy and 'revelation of what happened in biblical/anchient times' books and this one is a particularly good one.

The hero loses his parents in a car crash and when he grows up he follows them into a life of archaeology. Goodies and baddies alike are seeking to find or translate or destroy some newly found Dead Sea Scrolls, and if you spare some thought on the book title you can guess what revelation they contain.

There is a Pope, Mossad agents, various Vatican officials, rich Muslim 'baddies' and a flame from the heroes past, with the action spread between Israel, Rome and Syria.

While not as action packed as the Andy McDermott novels, which I really enjoy, The Second Messiah was enjoyable but not quite in the 'unputdownable' catagory

This feels as if it was his first book and has been dug out of a chest, updated but allowed to retain all of the cliches. We were treated to unreal dialogue and constructions such as '...conspired with criminals to steal priceless finds', or
'Jack looked away, racked by anguish'
'Jack's face sparked as he plucked the drawing...'
His voice was laced with arrogance and he snapped his fingers.'
'Kelly was grim. 'This is serious, Father Rossi. Deal with it personally.'
The brutal faced man with the leather jacket...
And of course a scattering of slim aristocratic hands and chiselled features, along with 'saying grimly' and so on

The plot is mediocre and the principle premise of the story, without giving too much away, would be unlikely to result in the consequences feared by the interested parties. I really can't find much to recommend about this - it just lacks Peter Lorre talking about 'ill-gotten gains' before cursing and saying 'you'll never get away with it'. Truly awful

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing 29 July 2011

To be honest I do love a good mystery but when it starts to get into too much indoctrine, then it starts to lose me as well as my interest. This title by Glenn is well written and whilst some of the prose at times feels a little over zealous, the plot line does wend its merry way to the heart of most conspiracies within the Christian church, the Vatican.

The lead character is decent enough and whilst he's no Indiana Jones he does come across as a little flat as well as lucky due to his survivability. Add to this some twists and turns that are expected within the genre and for me this was sadly more of a middle of the road affair rather than an adventure that you just couldn't put down. A great shame.
