3.0 out of 5 stars Huge fun to revisit & disover. 15 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Great science fiction that reminds us of imagination's power unleashed by the pen of an under appreciated master.
One beauty of E E 'Doc' Smith's work is his unbounded enthusiam for our species' potential. Though his universe is sculpted with the long-defuct notion of the ether, his wonderful stories aren't diminished. Instead there's a clear and honest flavour of an almost chivalrous space-travelling future.

Of course, the presence of cigarettes and a curiously deferential misogyny that reminds us of the cultural 'advances' we have taken since Smith's day. Just as we now know that Jupiter and her satellites are unlikely to be the arena such as Arcturus' crew might find.

Lord Tedric is a new discovery for me, that's touching ideas such as those delightfully expressed in Stephen Fry's "Making History." So much of this kindle edition has been a pleasure to read that I've spent too many early hours engrossed. Maybe it is time to reread those favourites of my teenage years, the classic "Lensmen" and "Skylark" series? With Edmund Cooper and James Blish, Smith was one of my favourite authors in the early 1970s and I thank my kindle for the chance to so easilly revisit them.

This was a welcome respite from the non-fiction histories and religious analyses that I spend far too long reading.
Yes you can treat yourself to a few hours with E E 'Doc' Smith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three classics for under £4? Cool! 8 Feb. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
E. E. 'Doc' Smith is something of a "marmite" author. You either love his work or can't stand it. I fall into the first group!

The stories stretch the boundaries of believability, but if you can suspend your common sense for a little while, they're a great read. Reasonably formulaic space-opera, good vs evil with a lot of action and a little romance.

These classics are a must-have to any sci-fi addict. And at this price..... !

4.0 out of 5 stars free love and marriage is sacred 2 April 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Classic sci-fi
Knocked off 1star because Vortex Blaster does not contain the rest of the novel just the mini novella.
Sexual mores are dated and sometimes contradictory in Galaxy Primes, free love and marriage is sacred?
However still very enjoyable after all these years

I enjoyed this collection of stories from an old favourite author, although the language is a little dated the stories are still fresh.
