Product Description

Christopher Eccleston stars as Steve, a Manchester City fan who thinks he is the Son of God, in this TV drama from 'Queer As Folk' writer Russell T. Davies. After spending 40 days and 40 nights out in the wilderness of Saddleworth Moor, the burial ground for the victims of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, Steve experiences a revelation which convinces him that he is the Messiah. He then returns to the city and begins to spread the word of God, performing miracles on live television, turning daytime into night, and finally ascending to Heaven from Maine Road football stadium.

A long list of people subsequently found in the 2005- series of Doctor Who worked on this, notably Christopher Eccleston in a performance that seems to have formed the template for his Doctor two years later. Of course, the writer and executive producer of The Second Coming also took those credits for the new sci-fi series, and there are many parallels in terms of plotting and characterisation that the two share. For example, despite the storyline, this show is really about a character other than Eccleston's Son of God; in the second episode, he appears only sparingly as Lesley Sharp's Judith takes centre stage. A similar approach recurs throughout Eccleston's year as the Doctor, when it seemed that anyone but the Time Lord himself would save the day.

When the plot does move back to Eccleston, the actor shines: he does comedy, terror, power, forgiveness, and is totally convincing throughout. The script's atheist message is appended at the close of a plot that starts on the assumption that the Christian story is true, but the religious aspect of this tale really gives way in the mind of the viewer to a simply appreciation of all those who worked on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best British Drama I have seen in Ages! 17 Feb 2003
Format:DVD
Wow! What can I say about this title? I'm sure that a lot of people will be offended by the story so well done to ITV for having the courage to air it. Not since BBC's First Born (1989) Have I been so impressed with a TV Series. The Second Coming revolves around a Manchester video store clerk called Steve Baxter, who disappears for 40 days and is found on the Yorkshire Moors in the North of England; incoherent and babbling he claims that he is the Son of God. No one believes him until he performs a major Miracle that makes everyone stand up and notice him. Steven isn't mad, he is the Second Coming. Baxter then proclaims that humankind must write it's own Third Testament and that they have 5 days to do it.

Christopher Eccleston puts on a fantastic performance and the idea to set it all in Manchester is inspired. I wasn't sure if we were really meant to believe Baxter was the Son of God when I first heard about this drama but that is soon cleared up from the start. Throughout the programme I was left on the edge of my seat wondering how this could possibly end well, I won't Ruin it for you so I'll say no more. The relationship between Steve's friends is amazing particularly with the only woman he has ever loved, especially because she does not believe in him.

You Absolutely have to see this show it is a must have DVD and I am going to purchase it the day of its release.

Well I hope I've convinced you to see this thought provoking, intelligent and bold British drama. I'm sure someone will eventually write a better review than this one, as this is my first review; I know it's not great. I hope you find it useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and character-driven 29 Jun 2012

This is a truly excellent DVD. I first watched the Second Coming when it was on TV years ago and wanted to see if it was as good as I remembered - I was pleased to find it was even better! Christopher Eccleston is fantastic as usual, and the whole concept was handled very well indeed. I noticed some other reviewers complaining they don't think Jesus would have acted like that - I think there they are missing the point that Jesus was meant to have been an apparently "ordinary" person (barring the story of his birth and being found in the temple) until his thirties. I found the ending to this particularly clever - watch it if you enjoy thought-provoking and challenging ideas, steer clear if likely to be offended by a modern take on religion.
