This 4 disc collection of 20th century chamber wind music is a marvellous gift to us. Out of the 23 pieces, I've only heard two before, so unlike so many box sets, I did not wind up buying duplications of things I already have 15 recordings of. All of the composers represented must have really enjoyed writing for a wind quintet as most pieces are light, bright and challenging. The ensemble is made up of members of the Berlin Philharmonic (I see them regularly on the BPO DVDs)and they are an absolutely fabulous ensemble! Some sections are extremely fast and difficult but these performers zip through them like taxis in Paris with a few beeps, honks and toots thrown in and no accidents. I suspect I liked every one of the pieces (and I did!) because they are played so very, very well. The sound is lovely and BIS leaves long gaps between the individual pieces so you don't get too lost with so many pieces played by the same instruments. On my set, the disc labeled "2" is actually "3" and vice-versa clearing up why Villa-Lobos sounded a bit like Henze. I have thousands of recordings and this one is going to that desert island with me, though at last count I'm going to need a very big desert island.
