Review

"The Search for Wondla" by Tony DiTerlizzi, about young Eva Nine and her search for other humans on the planet Orbona, is perhaps the strongest of the three books mentioned here, with passages that are reminiscent of Arthur C. Clarke. The book's Web site, at wondla.com, is the main stage for something called WondLa-Vision, a tailored version of what is generically called augmented reality, the practice of superimposing data over photographic or video images (think of Terminator-vision, with its tracking targets and data streams.) WondLa-Vision works in concert with your PC's webcam. There are three illustrations spread throughout the book that can be "recognized" by WondLa-Vision. If you hold any of these up to your webcam while at the site, you will unlock an online map of Orbona (different images open different parts of the map.) Books, movies and video games will all contribute to this new form of storytelling, and I would not be surprised if it happens to children's and young adult literature first. We may scoff at so much gimmickry, but what adults call gimmickry kids call something else: awesome." New York Times Book Review, 7th November 2010 "The illustrations, also created by the author, are a marvel in themselves...Young readers will have no difficulty in relating to Eva. The only problem will be containing one's patience for the next book." The Bookbag, Nov 2010 "Tony DiTerlizzi honours traditional children's literature in this totally original space age adventure: one that is as complex as an alien planet, but as simple as a child's wish for a place to belong..." Tatty's Treasure Chest, 25 Nov 2010 "Particularly interesting is the way Muthr grows just as much as Eva - maybe more - during the story, as her assumptions are challenged and she's forced to allow Eva to take risks and truly grow up." SFX Magazine, Dec 2010 "One neat touch is that the flora and fauna of the world Eva explores appear to be based on microscopic organisms. Also noteworthy are DiTerlizzi's full-page illustrations, clean-lined and impressive in their use of stippling and spot colour." Financial Times (UK & Ireland), 6 Nov 2010 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Eva Nine was raised by the robot Muthr. But when a marauder destroys the underground sanctuary she called home, twelve-year-old Eva is forced to flee aboveground. Eva Nine is searching for anyone else like her. She knows that other humans exist because of a very special item she treasures ~ a scrap of cardboard on which is depicted a young girl, an adult, and a robot along with the strange word "WondLa". Tony DiTerlizzi honours traditional children's literature in this totally original space age adventure: one that is as complex as an alien planet, but as simple as a child's wish for a place to belong.

Known for his Spiderwick Chronicles work, Tony is coming to a world of his own with his recent outings. Here he brings his own take on Carol's "Alice" which when blended with what feels like part "Fallout" part "Logan's Run and wraps it all together with his own brand of Science Fiction that young readers will just love.

The book, when backed with Tony's wonderful artwork will make for a fun reading, especially when you get to know the "in jokes" that pervade throughout.

All in a great adventure with a whole host of interesting characters that readers will want to hang out with. Add the secret computer pieces and you know that there's some real magic about.

The Search for WondLa 11 Oct 2011
By Sarah Gibson TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Eva Nine has spent her life in her underground home being raised by robot Muthr, she has never seen another human and has never even been outside. Muthr has been training her for life above ground so that she can search for others like her but her training is cut short when they come under attack. Forced to flee from everything she has ever known Eva soon realises that nothing above ground is what she expected. Can she survive long enough to find other humans?

The Search for WondLa is a great science fiction adventure story for children, I can see it making great bedtime reading for families or being enjoyed by slightly older children who have discovered the joy of reading for themselves. The illustrations throughout make this a treat to read, they are beautifully drawn and really help to bring the wonderful array of characters to life. I would love to have just half the imagination and drawing ability of Tony DiTerlizzi! You can also find additional information and interactive features on the website that just add to the reading experience.

Eva is a likable character she has led a very sheltered life but is extremely brave and caring. Although life above ground is nothing like what she was expecting she quickly adapts and soon begins to make friends. I loved her relationship with robot Muthr who is the only mother figure she has ever known, Muthr can be overprotective like any mother and there is friction between them at times but they care deeply for each other. Another favourite character was Otto, I'm not going to say too much about him but he is like an adorable puppy and I want one.

The Search for WondLa is a real treat for kids of all ages (even grown up ones!) and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The search begins.. 20 Aug 2011
By Michelle Moore TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

The Search for WondLa is the creation of Tont Di'Terlizzi, well known for The Spiderwick Chronicles. It tells the story of Eva Nine, who has been raised in an underground home by Muthr, a robot. She's being prepared for her life outside, but when she gets there, she finds that it's very different to what she was expecting.

Chased by a baddie, Eva Nine sets out to find other humans, and her journey brings her into contact with unusual people and places. It's worth pointing out that this is the first book in a trilogy, so by the end, her journey is not complete. It is still a nice ending though.

The book is a strange combination - it has an old fashioned fairy tale feel to it, and yet it's set in the future, with sci-fi elements. It's a combination which can take a while to get used to, but it's worth persevering.

The illustrations are also unusual, based on a `two colour' technique. It does add to the overall feel of the book, but I have to admit that I would have preferred full colour. The addition of illustrations make this a good book for those first moving into full length books, and I think the ideal age is somewhere between 8 and 12, depending on reading level. I think it's particularly suited to those who enjoy the whole experience of a book - it's certainly the sort of book which would be cherished by those who enjoy the story.

The Search for WondLa is supported by a website, where you can see examples of the artwork, play games, download desktop images etc. It also includes WondLa Vision, which can be activated using images in the book. Unfortunately I had problems making it work, but the demonstration looks good, so I will try again.
