I found this book fascinating, but also very challenging. The book shows it is not wrong to want intimate relationships, as they are given by God and allow us to glimpse what a relationship with him is like. However, relationships need to be seen in this light and turned back to God. If this is not done, and relationships are not worked through as God desired, there will be many problems.
This book takes the reader through many deep issues concerning relationships. It notes how important it is to have intimate relationships, though this does not solely concern martial relationships. Storkey shows that although it is difficult to have intimate relationships with more than 12 people, it is possible to have such relationships in a number of ways, including friendships, sibling relations, filial relationships and so forth. Having such relationships is a gift from God and develops our understanding of God.
Storkey also shows us that there are many barriers stopping us from having fully intimate relationships. These vary according to the type of relationships, but generally fall into the three categories of past experiences, the individualistic society we live in and its expectations and other relationships.
This book is fantastic and deserves a read. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to consider relationships, whether Christian or not.
