DJ Food, after a long hiatus, returns with THE SEARCH ENGINE, which incorporates a new element: rock music. Indeed, "All Covered In Darkness Pt. 1" has a that strum and the feel of live drumming, even as it goes buck wild. Matt Johnson, better known as The The, adds his vocals to "Giant," which only adds to that rock feel, even if the track is mostly by electronics (the track does, however, run too long). The rock goes psychedelic with "The Illectrik Hoax" and segues into the thick 4/4 beat of "Sentinel (Shadow Guard)." JG Thirlwell adds menace to "Prey," and even the robot funk of "Percussion Map Pt. 1" sounds roughed up. "Magpie Music" gets back to the eclectic, sample-crazed DJ Food of the past, and the eerie "A Trick of the Ear" brings back the jazz. Finally, "Colours Beyond Colours" launches into blissfulness, and we can hear where we should have been all the time.
