The Empire stands victorious over its enemies at last.

With her chief rival cast into the abyss, Empress Seda now faces the truth of what she has cost the world in order to win the war. The Seal has been shattered, and the Worm stirs towards the light for the first time in a thousand years. Already it is striking at the surface, voraciously consuming everything its questing tendrils touch.

Faced with this threat, Seda knows that only the most extreme of solutions can lock the Worm back in the dark once again. But if she will go to such appalling lengths to save the world from the Worm, then who will save the world from her?

The last novel in the epic, critically acclaimed Shadows of the Apt series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a bit flat... 22 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been reading this series since book one, and have thoroughly enjoyed the series as a whole. There have been one or two books that have been a little slow, but in a ten book series that's no great shock. Unfortunately, this was one of them. The whol book just seems as if it's just been quickly thrown together to meet a tight publishing deadline. The whole "worm" race could have been more compelling and interesting had the vast majority of the book not been about hiding from them in the depths.

While reading this book, I just seemed to be waiting for some good action, a big fight scene, a grand battle, but when the action came, it was just a little flat in comparison to other novels in the series. Disappointing for a finale, which is oftentimes feeling when completing an epic series

Brilliant finale to a gripping series. Right up there with the Malazan for me.

Thanks for an amazing world and I can't wait to see what new works this author produces.

The final book in the series and I wondered how Adrian would manage to bring it all together. An amazing end to an amazing series with a conclusion reached. Well worth the read and the wait imho.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Suitable Ending 7 July 2014
By Jim Wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This 10th and final book of The Shadow of The Apt ends a brilliant construction of a truly different world peopled by composite human/insect linden (races or ethnicities). The types are consistent and rich. The distinction between apt (technologically rational) and unapt (non-technical but close to magic) is wonderfully carried off. The reader will also be drenched in all of those extremely delightful tropes derived from our antiquity (Spartan versus commercial city states, etc.).Thucydides would have seen much of his own times in this epic; and throw in the industrial revolution as well. Don't forget good and evil. A ten very meaty volumes awaits the reader. First rate in all respects. Astonishingly originality.

This book wrapped up all the loose ends to a wonderful series.
4.0 out of 5 stars It really is that good. 13 July 2014
By Jan Johansen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The series was a bit of a slow starter with me, but it did get riveting with time. An alien, but compelling world. It juggles a vast number of well-written and individual characters, all of which manage to have character growth over the series. And some of which manage to survive.

A few lapses in logic, mostly dealing with a world where a majority of peoples can fly. The Kinden, this worlds peoples, are also curiously uncurious about their Art, the special abilities shared by each people. If you had the potential to learn to fly with moderate effort, how many people wouldn't bother? Not a lot I think. I miss the presence of some kind of Art-masters. The emphasis on walls and fortifications in war also seem less than effective when most peoples can either fly or spider-stick to surfaces.

Otherwise, I am somewhat torn between a 4 and 5-star rating. It really is that good.
