It's been a long time since I read a really good swashbuckler and "The Sea Dogs" by Ken Barnes is a knockout from start to finish. Set in the 17th century, it traces the fortunes and misfortunes of Martin Denbow, son of a Kentish farmer who breaks with the family tradition and runs away to sea. But that's just the beginning of a rousing story crammed with incident and a whole gallery of memorable characters - male and female - and sweeping action on an exciting scale.

The author's attention to historical detail helps to paint a convincing picture of 17th century pirates as they really were. Not the figures of fun as portrayed in those silly "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies but as ruthless and barbaric professionals bent on raiding merchant ships for profit. The story even manages to take in such historic London events as the Great Fire and the Black along with real-life characters like Henry Morgan and Samuel Pepys. The action never stops and the interplay between the various characters keeps the story moving to a most exciting climax that leaves one wanting more.

If you like the novels of Patrick O' Brian, Bernard Cornwell and the ""Hornblower" series by C.S.Forester, you won't want to miss this. As a storyteller, Barnes is every bit as good and, in his handling of characters, perhaps even better. "The Sea Dog" is a highly- recommended swashbuckler that would make one hell of a movie.

As a period adventure,"The Sea Dogs" by Ken Barnes has all the sweep and swash of a Hollywood action picture. But where it improves over the standard Tinseltown product is firstly in its characters ( who come across as credible and well-rounded) and secondly in its historical accuracy. I got as big a kick out of the author's vision of 17th century London as I did from Robert Harris's impressions of Ancient Rome ( in "Cicero").

Barnes has a nice way of getting inside the minds of his characters and letting us share their aspirations and fears. Even the main villain, who is pretty ruthless, has a sensitive side. One does not expect this in an action story and it is most appealing. The whole multi-layered story is very fast-moving, packed with action and incident. In short, it's a rattling good read. If you're looking for a solid historical adventure, this is not to be missed.

Just finished Ken Barnes' terrific novel and I thoroughly enjoyed every page! This was everything you could ask for in a novel, fascinating characters, detailed descriptions and a fast moving plot that entertains throughout. Once I started I couldn't put it down and I have to agree with the other reviews that it would an amazing blockbuster movie. The author clearly spent a great deal of time researching the era and his attention to historical detail was most accurate. Bring on the sequel! Highly recommended read.

Historical novels are not my thing but I was given this book as a gift and I was mesmerized. It is a cliche to say I could not put it down but that is the case. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen. Most historical books are weighed down with unnecessary detail but not this one. The story just flowed and I am only sorry it has ended ..... or has it? Hollywood producers, get reading, you have a winner here.

A really good period adventure 29 Mar. 2014

It's been a long time since I read a really good period adventure and "The Sea Dogs" by Ken Barnes fits the bill perfectly. The meticulous attention to historical 17th century detail, the fast-moving plot plus a whole gallery of colorful characters makes this a great reading experience. The clever ending suggests a possible sequel. I would like to read more of Mr Barnes's work.
