Product Description

Rachel Carson’s National Book Award–winning classic effortlessly mingles detailed fieldwork and inspiring prose to reveal a deep understanding of the earth’s most precious, mysterious resource—the ocean
With more than one million copies sold, Rachel Carson’s The Sea Around Us became a cultural phenomenon when first published in 1951 and cemented Carson’s status as the preeminent natural history writer of her time. Her inspiring, intimate writing plumbs the depths of an enigmatic world—a place of hidden lands, islands newly risen from the earth’s crust, fish that pour through the water, and the unyielding, epic battle for survival.
Firmly based in the scientific discoveries of the time, The Sea Around Us masterfully presents Carson’s commitment to a healthy planet and a fully realized sense of wonder.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Rachel Carson including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about the Sea and the Oceans 5 April 2006

The Sea Around Us is wonderfully written and it's a must for all who are fascinated by the sea and the oceans.
Tides and tidal bores, land and underwater rivers, volcanoes, tidal waves, el nino, the impact of weather etc, how our oceans work around the world - east to west and pole to pole - it's all there, clear and concise yet easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating 5 Feb 2010
Wonderful book. You'll never think of the sea in the same way again.
Carson effectively started the conversationist/ecology movement with this title and Silent Spring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dive into it! 7 July 2014

I found this book following the Google Doodle honouring Rachel Carson's environmental awareness work. I was struck by how beautifully written this was. The description was evocative, and while it was a scientific book, the narrative flowed quite nicely. Somehow the content was highly educational but avoided the 'lecture' style. Because there is no proper 'story' to the book, I have been reading it on and off simply whenever I am in the mood to be transported into a deep ocean of discovery.

Good condition and dispatched promptly. Carson's work commands both literary and scientific merit. Eloquently written, this book engages even the not so scientific reader.

I bought this copy for my young friend's 15th birthday. It inspired me as a child some 50 years ago! Updated illustrations and a magical book.

It is one of the paradoxes in the ways of earth and sea that a process seemingly so destructive, so catastrophic in nature, can result in an act of creation. "e;
