In the late 1960s a band called Staveley Makepeace was born. Inspired somewhat by the late Joe Meek and his innovative home recording style, they put together a 'studio' in the front room of founder member Rob Woodward's parent's house in Coventry. Despite surviving on a shoestring budget, the boys Rob, Nigel Fletcher, Don Ker, Peter Fisher and Steve Tayton, managed to secure a record deal with the then all Caribbean orientated label Pyramid Records. They became known as the 'scrap iron' band on account of all the weird and wonderful sounds they incorporated into their music. In 1970 Steve Johnson replaced Pete Fisher on bass guitar and late in 1971 Owen John arrived in place of Tayton. Three years and as many labels later, an offshoot of the band recordd the biggest British hit single of 1972 - Mouldy Old Dough by Lt. Pigeon. Makepeace was shunted into the sidings for the forseeable future. However, they recorded many more singles for record companies over the following years. In 1978, Pigeon flew its last and the band concentrated once more on Makepeace. More singles culminated in 1983's 'Just Tell her Fred said Goodbye'. It brought the total to 13 singles on eight different labels. Note one album ever reached the shops. Now RPM Records is about to release the pioneer Makepeace album some 36 years after the band first saw the light of day. Twenty-two of their best recordings compirse 'Scrap Iron Rythym Revue'. The biggest enigman is whny this band wasn't successful in the 70s? Their music has certainly stood the test of time. A blend of wonderful 'pre-electronic' music combined with some infectious rythyms and imaginative songs make this CD and absolute must for all record collectors. One could hardly class this as a 'retro' album as the songs are refreshingly new to the ears. There's nothing like it around at present. Top buy.

An absolute classic from the lads behind Lieutenant pigeon,a great sound, years ahead of its time. The production values are superb and sound quality perfectly proportioned, all the more remarkable as these recordings are now over thirty years old.Rob Woodwards vocal style really stands out, as does Nigel Fletchers unique drumming, identifiable voice, various shouts and that "scrap iron sound".
The only thing missing from this masterpiece is that timeless classic "Reggae Denny", perhaps the cornerstone for volume 2.
All in all a great listen from the boys, who are still making music today under the "Lieutenant Pigeon" banner.Five star rating.

Well..well...I bought this album on the strength of Lt Pigeon stuff and I was more than surprised. Classic rock and roll from the early 70s and in a style that is matched by nobody.
Some of the tracks take a bit of getting used to but overall there is plenty to enjoy. Nige Fletcher, even if he's now gone off to play with trains, and Rob Woodward are as brill as ever. Fletch's drumming style is quite superb as are his is limited vocal appearances. Anyone who saw this band around the time will be transported back to the days when it was possible to see your local rock star down the chippy.
Top quality boys...more of the same please.
