Book Description

14 Jun 2012
At a time when Scotland is once again considering life as an independent nation, The Scottish Nationality Test is essential reading for any citizen or visitor with a sense of humour. So, how Scottish are you? Try your hand at Gender Studies to find out what makes your average Scottish male tick and what Scottish women really think of Scottish men. Discover the correct technical term for a small Edinburgh man sandwiched between two feuding Glaswegians and bask in the Scottish definition of a heatwave. In Modern Studies, there's also some not too taxing questions on finance, mostly to do with how Fred Goodwin got away with it for so long. And along with questions on sport and Scottish life, The Scottish Nationality Test will truly tell you just how Scottish you are. And it's laugh-out-loud funny too.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Sporran filler! 6 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A fine body of work. Some is written in phonetic Scottish, like Trainspotting, which adds to the whole immersion thang. An excellent loo book: easy to pick up and read something to tickle your diaphragm. Considering this setting, it also has the advantage of a wipeable plastic cover and absorbant pages. The author appears to have thought of everything. Perhaps he will now change his name to Cameron McSucceed. Oh dear...sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Salmond's Leap 27 July 2012
Format:Paperback
At first sight an amusing but quirky bit of self-deprecation of the Scottish nation by one of its many "best and brightest" that have chosen to live elsewhere. The distance away seems to enhance the comedy and pathos of a love/hate relationship that is reflected in this very funny book;particularly if the reader has some prior knowledge of the widely held misconceptions of cultural life in Scotland from popular television and film .That is from the point of view of an ex pat Englishman, who wonders what such a test may be set for his own country,by way of contrast.Like all of this genre,it is variable in its ability to entertain and amuse, but more than enough good material to pass the time on a journey back to Scotland from anywhere in the British Isles. And a great primer for the sort of people and culture that is to be found on arrival....if visiting the wrong places. But it can be read and digested on many levels,so is more than a "quick read and pass on "type of work. And it exemplifies the good value for which the Scottish nation is renowned.

Live in the same area as the author and somehow procured one of the original self-printed A4 booklet versions. This is the same but scaled down (in size, not content). Read more
