About the Author

Ryan Kurczak – Began his astrological training with The American Institute of Vedic Studies and the European Institute of Vedic Studies in the subjects of Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotish. He has studied astrology intensively under Richard Fish and Ernst Wilhelm. Ryan was initiated into Kriya Yoga by a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, and teaches in the Kriya Yoga tradition. He lives in Asheville, NC where he teaches, writes and works with local and international astrological clients, offering phone and internet astrological sessions. See: Richard Fish - In the early 1970s Richard made an intensive study of astrology. Having also studied under various Vedic teachers and astrologers, in 1977 he was awarded the degree and title of Jyotishnatak by Sri Visvanartha Deva Sarma, founder of the Viswa Jyotirvid Samgha. He has taught and practiced both Western and Vedic systems of astrology, as well as Hastha vidya (astropalmistry) and Prasna (horary astrology). Richard, was a minister of Center for Spiritual Awareness and taught Kriya Yoga meditation techniques, considering the practice of yoga to be the true "inner astrology."

Constantly Used Reference Book 26 Aug. 2014
By Karen M. White - Published on
Format: Paperback
I'm a full-time practicing Vedic astrologer and I keep this book open on my desktop. I refer to it often for meanings of the varga charts (divisional charts mathematically derived from the birth chart to get a close-up view of various parts of life), the additional yogas, shadbala (the six sources of strength of the planets), and the Lajjitaadi Avastas (the relationships between the planets and how they explain a person's psychology).

I especially love the House Lord Combinations, the most accurate "cookbook" I've ever read and I've read a LOT of Vedic astrology books! I highly recommend this book whether you are a practicing astrologer or not.

After reading and studying Volume 1 along with MP3 classes offered on Ryan`s website I was hooked!
I decided to continue with Mp3 courses that go along with the 2nd book which is volume 2.
I took notes and filled a few notebooks that I keep on hand for reference.
I bought Volume 2 and am extremely satisfied with this book and how simple, organized and ready to use for chart interpretation.
The Appendix is a guide for the various divisional charts and what they are all about and indications of planets in every varga.
Plus the Appendix gives a complete guide to analyzing each house and how to use the divisional chart related to it.
This step by step analysis guide for interpreting is amazing! It includes the Atmakaraka, Moon and Lagna analysis.
One thing I really like is the inclusion of the Avasthas which are essential for understanding how the planets are functioning and interacting with each other in the natal and all the divisional charts.
Before taking the courses and buying this book divisional charts just seemed so far out of my depth and I was afraid to even try to work with them. Now I can not imagine looking at a chart without using them!
The chapter on bhava yogas is amazing, fresh and modernized in comparison to the classical texts on astrology.
Bhava yogas are basically an analysis of what happens when the Lord of a house is positioned in another house.
The positive and negative influences of the Bhava yogas are a fascinating and insightful tool.
Volume 1 & 2 have provided me with a solid reference for all the foundations that advance studies are built on.
So many questions we all have are clearly explained like rules on planetary war, strengths of karmas and prasna astrology.
I am hooked and thoroughly enjoying my studies and it all started on Ryan`s website and with books Volume 1 & 2 of the Art and Science of Vedic Astrology.
I am now with studying the Vimshottari dasa system along with the Nakshatras and transits thanks t

Excellent, much needed well-written reference book for any student ... 22 Sept. 2014

Excellent, much needed well-written reference book for any student of Vedic Astrology that has either read Vol. 1, or already had the basics down. Especially great for those, practice tropical vedic astrology, well-organized and entertaining to read as well. I highly recommend this book.

Surprisingly Informative…... 4 Jun. 2015
By Paul Manouvrier - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The quality of the book surprised me. I've been reading astrology books since the early 80's, so I didn't expect to find much that was new.
I found new explanations and better explanations than I've found in most other Astrology books. If I were trying to learn to do charts, I'd start
right here. What surprised me was that the author mentioned other astrology books, but, in my opinion, this is, on the whole, a better book than others he's mentioned. The best compliment that I can pay the author, is that as soon as I finished Vol. 1, I bought Vol. 2. Guess that makes it a page-turner!

Beyond the Basics, Excellent! 15 Dec. 2014
By SteveGuy - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is a great book to take you beyond the basics. Mr. Fish and Mr.
Kurczak have done a great job explaining topics such as the Lajjitaadi
Avashtas, the Vargas, and even Prashna (Vedic Horary) Astrology very
clearly and well. I particularly liked the step-by-step process and
the lists of planetary karakas in the back of the book. So far,
I've been very satisfied with both volumes of the Art and Science
of Vedic Astrology. These are great desk references to help with
chart interpretation and gaining deeper insights into Jyotish.
