Product Description

Product Description

A collection of four great novels in one book- The Time Machine, The Island Doctor Moreau,The War of The Worlds and The First Men In The Moon.

About the Author

H.G. Wells was born in Bromley, Kent in 1866. After working as a draper's apprentice and pupil-teacher, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in 1884, studying under T. H. Huxley. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in biology and resumed teaching but had to retire after a kick from an ill-natured pupil afflicted his kidneys. He worked in poverty in London as a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories. It was with THE TIME MACHINE (1895) that he had his real breakthrough.

Frighteningly good 18 Sep 2001

Format:Paperback
This book is a gem. Four of the most thought provoking science fiction stories, written by a true visionary, in one volume.

The Time Machine (soon to be made in to a Hollywood film) must have been one of the first books to deal with the subject of time travel. A scientist presents his theories and then puts them in to practice. He visits all kinds of places and meets some bizarre new creatures.

The Island of Dr. Moreau is a chilling story of a scientists experiments on an uninhabited island. A man is shipwrecked on the island and is compelled to write an account of what this disturbing individual is doing.

The First Men in the Moon is an eye-opening tale written before men had actually landed on the moon. A wannabe playwright befriends an inventor on a stay in the countryside and they embark on a fantastical voyage in their ingenious craft.

The War of the Worlds is a true classic influencing so much of todays throw away Sci-Fi genre. A man is plunged in to a surreal situation when an alien craft lands near his rural English town. His account of his flight from this area and all he encounters on his travels towards London is spellbinding.

Wells' vision is astonishing; to be able to create such stories in the age in which he lived makes him a true pioneer of Science Fiction. His writing style is understandably old-fashioned but that just adds to the charm of his stories and makes you realise how old these books really are.
