Book Description

Here are twenty-five stories of fantasy and science fiction selected from the pages of Wildside Press's Fantasy Adventure anthology series, selected by its editor, Philip Harbottle. Throughout its run of thirteen issues FA presented both original stories and classic reprints by veteran British SF and fantasy writers, including Sydney J. Bounds, John Russell Fearn, John Glasby, Philip E. High, and E. C. Tubb. They were soon joined by newer writers, most notably Eric Brown, and the series became a modern showcase for the best of British science fiction and fantasy writing.

Included are:

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Wildside Press special 21 Oct. 2013
By Mondoro TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

A collection of stories by British fantasy and SF writers, ranging from 'hard science' to tales of the supernatural (the first two stories, by Brian Ball). I was struck by the brilliant whodunit story from the one non-British author in the anthology, Antonio Bellomi, where some knowledge of Bode's Law turns out to be very handy. The majority fall into the SF category, with two cautionary tales about how to manage first contact situations in space: the ironically-titled 'Final Contact', and the outstanding story in this collection, E C Tubb's 'The Greater Ideal'.

The overall standard of stories in this collection is high, with only one or two duds and one rather dated, overlong item ('Prisoner of Time') which seems out of place here. However, the presentation is somewhat below the usual Wildside standards, with a repeated paragraph at location 1795 ('Assassin') and a host of typos in Philip High's 'The Gunman'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very varied "cheap as chips" collection. 21 Sept. 2014

This collection features SF and ghost stories published in the magazine Fantasy Adventures in the 2000s. Most are SF. A number of the stories were originally published in other magazines and range from the early 1950s onwards.

The authors are mostly British. The only one I had heard of previously was E C Tubb, though for some reason I had assumed he was American. Most of the authors though unknown to me were prolific writers, for example Sydney J Bounds wrote a number of scripts for the TV series Space 1999, as well as many novels and short stories in various genres.

One big gain from this book therefore is to become aware of other writers, as a guide to further reading, though disappointingly a lot of their material is currently OOP. We can only hope that by the magic of Kindle, much of it will become available again, if readers ask for it and publishers can acquire the copyright to make a digital edition.

Given the variety of authors and the spread across time -- over 60 years! -- the writing styles vary considerably. This I hope will add to your enjoyment of the collection, though some of the earlier stuff may seem dated to the modern reader.

As usual with this kind of ebook scanned from print editions, there are a few minor typos where the character recognition has gone wrong. On one page a paragraph confusingly is repeated. There is one major error at the end, where the appendix "About the authors" cuts from Brian Ball straight to the "Tweet you have finished this book" page.

At any rate that does not matter much given the price, which as usual with the Megapack series is very cheap, a mere 37 pence at the time of writing. You cannot get a chocolate bar as cheaply as that nowadays!

I liked this collection because, well because I like classic old school SciFi, and I like the authors in this collection - a bit of a boys own adventure vibe, some stories had nice little twists in them too...

I don't want to get involved in a full length novel, so these short stories were just right. When the story did not appeal to me I just skipped it. Wonderful value for the money.

I always like anthologies, the stories are always short and to the point with some having surprise endings and they are always entertaining reading.
