'I have twice suffered from nervous illness,' Dr Schreber reports, 'in either case as a result of intellectual over-exertion; on the first occasion (when I was presiding over the provincial court in Chemnitz) as a result of standing for the Reichstag, on the second as a result of the unusual burden of work that I encountered when I took up my new appointment as Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal in Dresden' (p. 34).
