Product Description

Product Description

A companion to The Rattle Bag, The School Bag is an engaging and authoritative selection for the classroom.

Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes have chosen an eclectic range of poets read in today's schools, but also those poems that the editors themselves read at school, or those from which they learned the most. Balancing the canon with more personal selections, The School Bag is an exhilarating introduction for any student of poetry.

About the Author

Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection of poems, appeared in 1966 and since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations - including Beowulf (1999) - which have established him as one of the leading poets now at work. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. District and Circle was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O'Driscoll, appeared in 2008. In 2009 he received the David Cohen Prize for Literature. Human Chain was awarded the 2010 Forward Prize for Best Collection.

Follow that! 1 Sep 2011
By RR Waller TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Following on from their earlier success with an anthology - "The Rattle Bag" for Faber in 1982 - these two great friends and colleagues collaborated again with this rich selection of varied poetry, some "simple and basic", others "deep and thoughtful".
There is not much in the way of criticism or analysis, just a wonderful selection of poems and poets from two people who knew well what they were writing about and reading.
An excellent selection.

This collection, covering an astonishingly wide range of work from many different historical periods, should be in every library. With as many magical discoveries as old favorites. Not to be missed.

(And be sure to find The Rattle Bag as well).
