Product Description

Product Description

A companion to The Rattle Bag, The School Bag is every bit its equal in terms of liveliness and scope. The new anthology is designed to present a great range of poetry in a fresh and accessible way. Allowing no more than one poem, or passage of poetry, to any poet, the editors have chosen not only work from the established canon of poetry in the English language, but examples, too, from the different languages of Scotland, Ireland and Wales, arranging them by subject matter rather than chronology. The results show the same confidence of taste, breadth of interest and sheer passion that made their previous collaboration so successful.

About the Author

Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection of poems, appeared in 1966 and since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations - including Beowulf (1999) - which have established him as one of the leading poets now at work. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. District and Circle (2006) was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O'Driscoll, appeared in 2008. In 2009 he received the David Cohen Prize for Literature.

Follow that! 1 Sep 2011
By RR Waller TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Following on from their earlier success with an anthology - "The Rattle Bag" for Faber in 1982 - these two great friends and colleagues collaborated again with this rich selection of varied poetry, some "simple and basic", others "deep and thoughtful".
There is not much in the way of criticism or analysis, just a wonderful selection of poems and poets from two people who knew well what they were writing about and reading.
An excellent selection.

This collection, covering an astonishingly wide range of work from many different historical periods, should be in every library. With as many magical discoveries as old favorites. Not to be missed.

(And be sure to find The Rattle Bag as well).
