Product Description

Review

'Another excellent sequel is Cliff McNish's THE SCENT OF MAGIC (Orion, c. 4hrs, 9.99), read by Sian Phillips and again with spine-chilling music. This time the witches advance on earth to take their revenge on the children who killed their queen in DOOMSPELL.' (Christina Hardyment )

'An operatic performance by Sian Phillips brings out the many crescendos on a global battle of good and evil. More epic in scale, and more malevolent in mood, than Harry Potter. Shorter sentences, too, which suits impatient over-eights.' (Carole Mansur DAILY TELEGRAPH )

'Rachel and her brother Eric's powers to unmake magic are tested to the full in this thrilling sequel to DOOMSPELL. Sian Phillips' reading is good, if lacking in characterisation, and the whole thing is an exciting listed for children over eight. Great for in-car entertainment.' (THE AUDIOBOOKSELLER )

'spine- chilling music' (INDEPENDENT MAGAZINE )

The Doomspell was great.. The Scent of Magic is even better. The Witches have come for their revenge and all the world is rocked. The old characters are there, stronger than ever, with some great new ones like Yemi, Heiki and Heebra. McNish manages to describe the world in a style so vivid you feel a part of every scene. Some of the imagery is magical and then sometimes quite scary. But it is always convincing and very exciting. The story is not without humour either. The close relationship between Eric and the Prapsies is a delightful part of the whole. Read it now, you won't be disappointed.

FANTASTIC! 24 Oct 2001

Cliff McNish is now my favourite writer, I think he's put a spell on me. I loved his first book and this one is just as good. I missed Scorpa, the wolf, but all the characters are great so I tried not to mind. I couldn't stop reading it even in bed. I recommend this book for everyone to read because it's GREAT!!!!

This book is even better than Doomspell. I missed Dragwena (perversely!), but Heebra is more calculating and even more sinister in some ways. The Scent of Magic is as beautifully written as The Doomspell, but if anything the characterisations are deeper, and the plot more original (the first had slightly too many echoes of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, I felt), while McNish propels the whole magnificent story along with his characteristic verve, pace and passion. This book has the feel and energy of the best thrillers. If anything the last chapters just go too fast, but that's a minor quibble!
