From Amazon.co.uk

In yet another example of Demi Moore's astonishing narcissism, this appalling adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Great American Novel becomes a teary, talk-show-worthy story of a woman rediscovering the erotic, of interrupted love, of a brave-but-beleaguered heroine's personal struggle against male stupidity. Never mind that this has little to do with Hawthorne's magnificent, protofeminist book, which is a million times more relevant today than this film could ever be. Director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) deserves to be horsewhipped for colluding with Moore's self-fascination, while Gary Oldman should be kicked in the pants for allowing the novel's main character to come off as an inconsequential ninny. Making matters worse, Robert Duvall can be seen ridiculously dancing with a deerskin on his head. If The Scarlet Letter were a joke, it would be a very bad joke. But it's not, and that's worse. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars audio problems 25 May 2011

Subtitles would help the enjoyment of this movie. A lot of the dialogue is very soft and rapidly spoken. Excellent performances by Oldman, Duvall and cast. Better than expected performance by Moore.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good romp but nothing like the book 9 Mar 2010
Format:DVD
Having bought the film as a slight short cut to reading the book, I became aware very early on that I was pretty sure the film had nothing in common with the book except the name. Character names are the same, and indeed Hester sleeping with the minister and having to wear the scarlet letter 'A'. But other than that there is nothing similar. The film provides an interesting account as to what happens before the book begins, and then shares nothing similar in plot to the book. Chillingworth turns into a psychopathic fake indian guy who scalps some random character that isn't in the book and Dimmesdale is FAR better looking, charistamtic and sympathetic in Gary Oldman's protrayal than the character in the book. Basically, I really enjoyed the film and I would recommend it to anyone and especially to Gary Oldman fans. But if you're looking for an accurate adaptation of the Nathanial Hawthorne book then this isn't the film for you.

I purchased this DVD as it was on the course for my English exam. It was a lovely heart-warming and sad film, all rolled into what went on in the old days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Gary!
Nothing like the novel.
Also, I am a Gary Oldman fan, but in this role I felt he was a damp squib!
Demi is also far too priggish!
