Review

The Scarifyers are back in The Secret Weapon of Doom, with Nicholas Courtney's Lionheart teamed up with Nigel Havers suave but not very bright agent Victor Bright, while Terry Molloy's Dunning encounters a prototype of the Viewers and Listeners Association. Terrible jokes and scattergun homages to crime and fantasy fiction make this a highly entertaining listen. Well worth catching. --Total Sci-Fi Online

The quality of the previous adventures have always been excellent and this new outing in the series has little trouble maintaining this high level... Molloy and Courtney are perfect in their parts and this time around are joined by Leslie Phillips (Colonel Black) and Nigel Havers, who plays Lionheart s new partner... Never a dull moment and always a joy to listen to, The Scarifyers continue to go from strength to strength. --Sci-Fi Online

Product Description

But returning to his first love, writing, proves more perilous than expected. Meanwhile, unhinged MI-13 chief Colonel Black (Leslie Phillips) has a new case for Lionheart (Nicholas Courtney). Partnered with top spy - and housewives favourite - Victor Bright (Nigel Havers), Lionheart investigates the disappearance of a fabled super weapon - and discovers they aren't the only ones searching for it... Death stalks our heroes at every turn. Lionheart and Dunning must fight for their lives as dark forces gather around the mysterious SECRET WEAPON OF DOOM...

I bought this a while ago but hearing of Nicholas Courtney's death somehow robbed me of any wish to listen to it - perhaps subconsciously fearing it might be a poor farewell to a man who has given me so much entertainment over the years. But I'm so glad I finally listened to it. If this is the last Scarifyers (and who could ever replace Lionheart?), it makes a worthy epitaph for both Nicholas and the team of Lionheart and Dunning. As funny as ever, if not more so, this one manages to throw in sly jokes about everything from the Inklings (especially Tolkien) to Zulu, while telling an excellent story that keeps you on your toes to the very end. The cast are superb, and I must congratulate both Leslie Phillips and Nigel Havers on almost managing to upstage our favourite heroes; I would have loved to hear more of Victor Bright and mad Colonel Black - whose wasp phobia I share, curiously. I listened to one disc on my standard cd player and the other via my pc headphones, and I would seriously recommend you try the headphone option - I had been a bit dubious because of what seemed like sporadic fading sound, but it actually came across as a very clever use of stereo on the phones. Really first class entertainment all round, however you choose to listen, though.

I've listened to this story a couple of times now. After the first hearing I felt it wasn't as funny as the Curse of the Black Comet, but then Brian Blessed isn't in it. Because I'm a great fan of the series I didn't want to pass judgement that quickly, so I gave it another chance. After a couple of runs I feel this story is equally entertaining as the others. First of all because Dunning is sidetracked, but still plays his part. This gives it a unique character. And secondly because the story has a nice pace to it, and has a surprising end. All in all the usual Scarifyers quality oozes out.
It was therefor a major shock to hear of the demise of Nicholas Courtney. I fear this may well turn out to be the last episode of the Scarifyers (though I hope not!). That makes me all the happyer that I've added this story to my collection. Enjoy!
