Product Description

The Scarifyers is a series of rip-roaring tales of comedic supernatural intrigue set in 1930s Britain, distilling the likes of Dick Barton, The Avengers, The Devil Rides Out and Quatermass into cracking new audio adventures. The Scarifyers is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and has been described in the national press as 'rollicking good fun', 'a slice of audio perfection', 'the smartest and most enjoyable thing on British radio' and 'like Tintin but with the lights out.'

This is the third Scarifyers adventure."Sir" Harry Price, self-proclaimed Ghost Detective, has built a machine. His previous experiment - to turn a goat into a man - may have ended ignominiously, but now Harry plans to capture the spirits of the dead with his Price Ghost Captivator. If he can make it work, that is.Meanwhile, Londoners are being killed, in especially gruesome fashion, with their own electrical appliances.

But most puzzling of all is the Faraday Murderer's habit of leaving cryptic messages in 17th century English at the scene - messages that mention a certain Harry Price...

Age-old forces are stirring... The dead will rise... the Crown will fall. Can Lionheart and Dunning save King and Country?

I loved the Scarifyers from my first encounter (The Nazad Conspiracy), and they really do get better with every story. This starts with a gem of a scene involving Harry Price, famous ghost hunter, and like its predecessors, keeps up the quality right to the end. If you enjoy classic Doctor Who, Sapphire and Steel, M R James, H P Lovecraft, Quatermass - well, if you enjoy classic science fiction, horror, fantasy or humour, you will love these tales. Superbly written, with sterling performances from all concerned (especially Terry Molloy and Nicholas Courtney, who make Lionheart and Dunning one of the greatest double acts every created), and topped off with excellent production values, they are audio treats to treasure. And watch out for the sly in-jokes, particularly the lines cribbed from the Brigadier...

This is the third adventure for the Scarifyers. Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) and Lionheart (Nicholas Courtney) are the boys from MI 13, charged with investigating the supernatural and odd. The previous two adventures were absolutely cracking stories with a great sense of humour, and I am pleased to report that this outing continues in the same vein.

This time they run into a certain Harry Price, ghost hunter extraordinaire, and his ghost trapping machine. How is it linked to a series of gruesome murders involving electrical appliances? I can't say too much without giving away the plot, but suffice to say that there is a spooky explanation that is gruesomely well realised. There is also the usual humour, especially the village that is cursed, which is well worth listening out for.

Sadly there is no room for Aleister Crowley in this adventure, but David Benson still appears and provides good solid support, especially with his deliciously over ther top characterisation of Oliver Cromwell. Gabriel Woolf has a lot of fun as Matthew Hopkins.

Funny, good mystery, spooky and has the reassuring tones of Nicholas Courtney rolling around your ears. Another absolutely delightful adventure from the Scarifyers and well worth getting. 5 stars.
