5.0 out of 5 stars 70's PBS 19 May 2010
By Adnil Ronyart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In the early 70's PBS showed a BBC production of this book. The series starred Peter Ustinov as the mayor of Clochemerle. For years I have searched DVD's and websites for a mention of Clochemerle - at last I found it! Although the film version is apparently not available other than in the BBC archives, the book is a delightful trip down TV memory lane. I laugh all over again over the antics of the villagers in this lovely French wine producing village. If you love good satire, this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readable, memorable, amusing & French. 14 Jun 2005
By David Drori Dr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Scandals of Clochemerle, I would say, is a hilarious caricature of life in the hypocritical catholic French countryside. I wonder why it is not reprinted. I read it when I was young and recall it as one of the funniest books I ever read. Get it.
Believe it or not, I looked it up apropos a dialogue with a friend about the presumably superior intelligence of Ashkenazi Jews (we both are) as indicated by a report in the June 4, 2005 Economist. My friend (a geneticist) pointed out that over the centuries while Ashkenazi Jews selected high IQ Talmud-scholar boys and married them to rich girls to produce 8 or 10 offspring, the catholics encouraged their best offspring to be priests, monks and nuns. How true... Was the selection efficient? We really don't know...
