The Blackbox in Galway is a comparatively small venue without muchatmosphere, it is quite simply a black box. BUT add the Saw Doctors and afew thousand fans and it transforms into the biggest Irish Pub Sessionyou've ever experienced.
The set is a compilation of Saw Doctors classic numbers ranging in musicalstyle from Celtic ballad to Rock with a smattering of Ceili, punk andcountry thrown in. What makes the tracks special though is that the lyricsare about real people (like Tommy K and Michael D), real places (you canlook them up on a map or if you're lucky enough even go there) and realemotions. They are carefully crafted, poetic, poignant or punchy asrequired by the story they tell. This isn't plastic Pop manufactured forthe masses these are vignettes of life or people in or from the west ofIreland set to music that fuses several styles together in a unique blendthat simply is The Saw Doctors. If you don't know a single Saw Doctorsnumber you'll still be singing along before the end - it's compulsory!
The Saw Doctors CD's have always been good but the production "rounds off"the tracks and leaves them short of some of the raw edge and pace thatmakes the band so special when you see them live. At last many of theclassic numbers can be seen on DVD being performed with the vitality andaudience feedback and interaction that makes their concerts such anexperience.
The TG4 documentary also gives a good insight into the band, the place andthe obvious respect in which they are held by so many in Galway and beyond- even those that they sing about like "Michael D". They play "unplugged"on Clare Island (with Grainne Uile's castle in the background) and in aTuam pub, proving that it doesn't have to be played loud to be good. Youalso get a real feel for the fact that music isn't a job for the band itsa way of life but its not a life that they take too seriously because thefriends and fans don't let them (hence Leo's comment about being a star!)
No DVD can ever be as good as a live concert. Most band's live concertsaren't as good as this DVD! Then again I could be biased - I am one of thepeople in the slide show at the end! Seriously though, buy this DVD andhelp induce them to make more there are over 60 other Saw Doctors' numbersI'd like to have on DVD!!!
