From early Victorian times until independence, the vulnerability of the Indian sub-continent to an invasion by Russia engaged the attention of British politicians of every political persuasion. In the Victorian era it was known as the "Great Game", and to ensure that her own rather than Russia's interest prevailed, Britain twice invaded Afghanistan in the 19th century. In more recent times a third campaign was launched to crush the Afghan armies of Amanullah and there were frequent clashes with the fiercely independent Pathans whose reputation for bravery, cruelty and cunning was tempered by the mutual respect with which tribesman and British soldier regarded each other. Drawn from journals and diaries of generations of British soldiers and government officials who served in this most sensitive and volatile of national borders, this is a piece of military history.

In Victorian times, the British Army then will accept three or four hundred dead in a scrap with relative ease. I wondered at first if this were due to many of them being colonial troops, but they are equally sanguine about losses of British officers and men.
I suppose this is what you have to be like to have a global empire; rather like the Romans were, I imagine.

Not As Bad As All of That, Eh?

Drawing from the journals of generations of British soldiers and government officials who served on the infamous North-West Frontier in Afghanistan, Richards vividly communicates the danger and excitement confronting those engaged in bitter conflict. Covers the Victorian times on this border to the Russian invasion in 1970s. The writing could be better, but the information is interesting and important to understanding today's Afghanistan.

The author's fascinating subject--brave deeds in an exotic land--succumbs entirely to his inability to make the subject come alive. The book is primarily of interest because of its bibliography

Here's a book pretending to be a history while written like a young boy's adventure. The only "research" seems to come from the prejudiced memoirs of "solders" bemoaning the loss of their stores of "liqueurs and cigars" while they occupied a simple people who thrashed them until they left.
