Product Description

The desert lay before them, and the secrets of the amulet . . .

From Tafraout's magnificent mountainside, Isobel absorbs the heat and romance of the Moroccan vista before her, with mosque and homes scattered far below. But a mere slip sees her tumbling uncontrollably into the arms of handsome rescuer Taïb, who notices her unusual silver amulet, and that her fall has revealed a tiny scroll hidden within. Entranced by the possibilities of its intricate and illegible script, they set out for the Sahara in search of a Tuareg elder to unlock the riddles of its past.

Little does Izzy realize that the desert holds the key to more mysteries than the amulet's. From beneath the beating sun emerges nomadic Princess Mariata, whose stories of tortured love bind her to the precious talisman in Izzy's hands. She's battled the sands; she's found and lost love among its dunes. And where the amulet crosses both their paths, answers to the deepest secrets lie.

I loved Jane's previous novel The Tenth Gift, but this new one has quite blown me away. It's the work of a mature and skilled storyteller who demonstrates a great passion for her characters and for Morocco, the setting for the book. Isabelle, who comes to the country on a climbing holiday and finds more adventure than she bargained for, is a strong and believable modern woman, and it's fascinating to experience so vividly the place and the people through her eyes. Fascinating, too, is the story she tells of another feisty woman - Mariata, well-born daughter of the old nomad desert tribes, the 'people of the veil', at a time when their distinctive way of life is threatened by creeping modernity - and by violence. Jane cleverly weaves these two stories together in such a way that one moves easily from one to the other and it's most satisfying when, one by one, the book's mysteries reveal themselves. Well researched and richly told, The Salt Road is a wonderful read that stays long in the imagination.

I'm not a romance fan. Heaving bosoms don't do it for me - nor do long meaningful gazes etc. I'm pleased to report that whilst The Salt Road may very well keep romance fans happy, I didn't notice any romance genre cliches and thoroughly enjoyed the story. Actually I'm so ardently not a romance fan that I've never read one, so perhaps I do like them after all... In any case, I found the book to be beautifully written, and the story to be intriguing throughout and satisfying at the end. Not only was I introduced to a fascinating culture I knew far less about than I thought I did, I was also introduced to the desert and saw it through new eyes & it's a wonderful place to visit.

The characters were strong and interesting, the tale is well paced, I really cared what was going to happen next. If I had anything to bitch about - I would - I'm not one to hold my peace.

I recommend it to pretty much any reader - it's just a good book. Nice cover too! :)

A really great read. 21 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading this book and enjoyed it so much. It satisfies on so many levels. It has history, mystery, adventure and romance and beautifully encapsulates another way of life. The romance is not overly sentimental or predictable. The story builds to a great climax and by the end I was finding it hard to put down! A really great read which is so well written. The author should be congratulated on her amazing imagination and skilled storytelling.
